Spencer Kellogg and Sons, Inc.
Spencer Kellogg and Sons, Inc. erected a linseed oil plant in Edgewater in 1909. The deepwater dock allowed ocean-going ships from India and Argentina to come
directly to the plant to discharge cargoes of flaxseed, which was pressed into linseed oil. In 1913 the plant started crushing castor beans from India. The castor oil was
used in the textile industry to soften fibers and impart luster to synthetic dyes.
In 1913 the plant started crushing castor beans from India. The castor oil was
used in the textile industry to soften fibers and impart luster to synthetic dyes. During World War I, facilities were installed to meet the heavy demand for coconut oil for
soap. (14)

The removal of linseed oil from flaxseed required heavy and costly equipment. The seed was ground between steel rollers and tempered by heat and moisture. The
mash was placed between hair mats in large hydraulic presses operating at high pressure. The oil was filtered and placed in large storage tanks to settle or age. In
the late 1930s, the processing technology improved with the use of expeller presses.

Aged oil was eventually replaced with boiled oil. By adding small amount of manganese and lead linoleates and heating to high temperatures, the drying time of the
boiled linseed oil for paints was reduced to only 15 hours compared to four days for the raw oil.

By 1946 total corporate sales reached a record of $140 million, representing over 1.0 million barrels of various oils.

And for some reason, a good dose of castor oil was always the home remedy for a tummy ache for kids! Probably did as much harm as good. Monty

Castor Bean plants grow in fields and roadsides here in South Florida and are considered pest weeds.
The seed also contains ricin, a toxin, which is also present in lower concentrations throughout the plant.
Do they still have a use for castor oil?

many.
In the food industry, castor oil (food grade) is used in food additives,[12] flavorings, candy (e.g., chocolate),[13] as a mold inhibitor, and in packaging. Polyoxyethylated castor oil (e.g., Cremophor EL)[14] is also used in the foodstuff industries.[15]
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has categorized castor oil as "generally recognized as safe and effective" (GRASE) for over-the-counter use as a laxative, with its major site of action the small intestine.[16] However, although it may be used for constipation, it is not a preferred treatment.[17] Undecylenic acid, a castor oil derivative, is also FDA-approved for over-the-counter use on skin disorders or skin problems.[18]

Castor oil penetrates deep into the skin thanks to its molecular weight, which is low enough to penetrate into the stratum corneum. Castor Isostearate Succinate is a polymeric mixture of esters with Isostearic Acid and Succinic Acid used for skin conditioning, such as in shampoo, lipstick and lip balm.[19]

Ricinoleic acid is the main component of castor oil and it exerts anti-inflammatory effects.[20]

One study has found that castor oil decreased pain more than ultrasound gel or Vaseline during extracorporeal shockwave application.[21]

Therapeutically, modern drugs are rarely given in a pure chemical state, so most active ingredients are combined with excipients or additives. Castor oil, or a castor oil derivative such as Cremophor EL (polyethoxylated castor oil, a nonionic surfactant), is added to many modern drugs, including:
and much more

Thanks. I meant do they still have use for pure bottled castor oil as would have most likely come in this box. I think I remember seeing it in the drug store. I would imagine the only personal use for bottled castor oil today is a laxative or skin conditioning although I dont imagine it is near as popular as it once was. Today modern drugs rarely come in a pure chemical state.

Your link states a lot of old traditional uses. I know that Ricin is very toxic and is considered a possible biological WMD..
