I found this under a large dying pine tree on the bank of the Pamlico River in North Carolina near Goose Creek State Park. The back is blank. Sorry for no size reference item in photo. It's approximately 1.5" x 1" I think it's some sort of copper alloy. It registered as a zinc penny on my MD (I almost didn't dig it!). Is this thing colonial? I really hope so!! Thanks for everything in advance!!

Could be a small shoe buckle, but a hat buckle is possible as well.

Well, that certainly helps. At least now I know it's old. Do you have any resources that pointed to that conclusion? I'm interested. Thanks for your help!!
