Oh my, IP, I think I just cracked a rib laughing so hard at the St. Kirk pic. :laughing9: :laughing9: I don't think anyone is going to be looking at your coin pics. Their eyes will be glued on the two objects that Kirk seems to be gawking at. :laughing9: :laughing9:

Here is my favorite colonial coin, the 1641-42 St. Patrick Farthing. Imported into NJ in the 1680's it was the first legal tender in the colonies. It is number one on my metal detecting want list. I am only aware of one being dug, and that was years ago.

My favorite DUG coin, however, is the 1773 counterfeit KG III dug in October of '08:

Sorry bout the 2 different photos for the obverse and reverse. I was having issues with my digital camera at the time. I really need to take new ones.

Neil, that's a great #1 and I too would love to find one. There's gotta be some in the dirt so you never know it might happen!

I've gotten 4 Colonial Coppers from Delaware dirt.

1 Connecticut Copper
2 KG II
1 KG III Irish Halfpenny

Delaware dirt is not nice to coppers

It may be your only one, but that is one of the most beautiful colonials I have ever seen dug. Every time I drive on Main Rd. through all the little towns of the North Fork on my way to Southold, I want nothing more than to jump out and start detecting.

I don't ever remember seeing a French silver from this area! It seems like Iron Patch and the others up north had that locked up!!

We find French but silver is tough, and large silver close to impossible. Our oldest sites are great, simply because of the age and what is possible, but sometimes you really have to work for a keeper. I'd definitely take a Loyalist site over the French, much higher potential for a great find.

Not my best colonial, but I found the beat up counterfeit Irish Halfpenny last February in the same field I found a worn down 1699 Wm III halfpenny 7 months earlier.

1781? The more I began to like the Irish the less I seem to find now!

Are we talking people or coins? ;D.

I believe this one to be 1780's, but it was one of those coins that the peroxide washed away any remaining detail on the reverse.

Hi Neil when that coin was found in old Johnnies potato field off RT.48 Northroad my oldest son Jim Jr. works the fields with Johnnie in Spring so Johnnie let me hunt them just after plowing along with the remains of what used to be slave huts from the 1700,s , i knew very little about what not to do and do it the coin was very dark even hard to see all the detail a friend of a friend who detects with me now looked at the coin hes a coin dealer in Southold here he said try using a little baking soda and white vinegar let soak for awhile and then brush with a very soft tooth brush rinse off and need be do it again which i did and as you can see the end result he said its pretty beat-up being hit by plows over long years and probably not worth much ? hhmm i was on a coin auction site from Paris not long ago and saw that exact coin with date and mint mark in much worse shape then mine even cracked in 2 places go for 800.00 US dollars !! Ill keep it since its my second find with a detector . Oh and by the way Neil what brings you to my area at times ?? you should know then this Northfork goes way back to the early 1600,s in spring give me a buzz if your coming out this way .Its amazing what you guys and gals find relics and coins that predate mine by a mile this is a great hobby and a great site  HH Jim
