I started out exploring the aspect of relic hunting because I
know what great potential there is for finding great stuff.

And....I feel I've learned a LOT about techniques in the fields.
But, it's really just not something I actually enjoy doing.

Maybe just getting too old for the amount of work it takes, (and
it DO take some actual WORK!) I have always been impressed by
just what the real relic hunters go thru to find the wonderful stuff
they share here.

So, after this hunt, I think I'm gonna shelve the idea for a while. It has taught
me a lot about my machine! Hopefully, I'll be able to use that on my regular
"walks".

Here's the latest hunt:

Most interesting piece to me. No clue. :dontknow:

2017 (207).jpg

I'm beginning to feel a bit like Blingy.

Would you believe this grate was over a foot and a half down!:BangHead:

All I saw while digging was a big rounded edge, brass or bronze, VERY deep
in VERY rocky ground! :BangHead: I just had to know! :dontknow:

Thanks for peeking folks and for all the education on this thing called
relic hunting. I'm glad somebody does it but it's just not for me.
At least, not for a while again. :dontknow:

By your title, looks like your getting passing grades. Relic hunting is a lot of research and some dry spells, but when you find that one holy cow! find it's all worth it! Do a little research & don't give up hope your off to a good start.

I can't wait to see what you'll be digging in the parks now. Should be good. Looking forward to it.

Looks like that drain cover was already damaged... bummer. Guess that won't be going in the lighted display case. :laughing7: Better luck next time. :tongue3:

Congratualtions on the continued relic hunting :occasion14:, it's tough going but the rewards can be great! How about once a week? :dontknow:

On an up note, you are find interesting relics (flat buttons are cool)...:icon_thumleft:

Your 2 lil gizmo's look out of place next to relics.

Keep it up. Hope you find a gold coin!

Keep diggin Wadi!

I know we are not supposed to leave things at recovery sites but I have reburied at least a couple.
One old copper line to a long gone drinking fountain in a park a couple hundred feet long...
And one time a sweet tone had me dig into the basement ( lowest level of any known civilisation ) through a hand sized hole widened at the bottom to reveal a silver ???? Wrench? No ,it curves more and...
Was a stainless sink top from a long gone building bulldozed into the park.

Remember ,neat tidy holes! L.o.l..

Lighted display case!?!?!? Heckfire! This thing almost went back into it's dark grave as soon as it hit the light of day again!!:BangHead:

Although, it does weigh about a hundred pounds or so. :tongue3: Solid brass/bronze. Might be worth two cents, somewhere. :dontknow:

Thanks!

Don't over think it WHATI, we're all just diggers. Although I go by "relic nut", and CW relics are my passion, that's not what I always target. If it's old and interesting, or just modern clad I love to dig it. I'll hunt private land, public land, old house sites or a wide open feilds. Depends on the mood I'm in when I decide to go. I've learned alot about old coins and had no interest in them before I started detecting. I guess just finding things and learning about them is what really turns me on. If you go hunting not targeting any specific thing, then you won't be disappointed because you didn't find it. Maybe I should change my name to just "Nut".
The little Misses says it fits.
You done well my friend. Good luck.

Oh yeah, I do know this. After all, what are rings. jewelry, etc. but relics of a different nature. :)
I also go upon my mood. I guess I just mean that hunting in farm fields are just not a favorite of mine.
Even though I venture into them, I'm really just going in there to find coins. Coinshooter at heart.

It's just that digging huge holes, stumbling over stalks, etc. is simply not fun for me. I'm sure that in all
the hunting I've done in parks, school grounds, etc. I've more than likely left behind some major relics.
All because they were too deep, to big, too difficult to dig down to with a simple knife. :dontknow:

I know I'll be walking a field again, it just won't be soon.

Have at it, "Nut"! :tongue3:

the amount of signals i've chased deep down.... always hoping its something interesting...still never found anything worth while over 1.5 feet haha. Curiosity always keeps me chasing those deep signals though.

Change can be an adventure too. What will you do to fill your time now?

Nicely done Whadi,
I have installed similar floor drain covers like the one you recovered. They were common in public toilets and shower rooms.
I remember carrying home a 2 inch brass valve that came out of a 12 inch deep hole. The price of brass and copper is around 90 cents a pound at the scrap yard. All those keys, clock parts, plumbing fittings, etc. really add up after awhile.
I have 2 tubs that probably exceed 50 lbs each. That's more than $100.

I prefer a stroll in the grass, and digging up a few coins too. If I had a good place to hunt for relics, then I might enjoy it more, but all I ever get is bug bitten and chewed up by the sticker bushes!

I still convince myself to do it, but always regret it.

Best of luck to you!

Hi Whadi, my ventures into the woods this year have paid off with a couple pocket fulls of old coins, buttons, jewelry. I do miss the $30 monthly coin star cash outs... good luck

Oh....heckfire....I know I'm not a relic hunter, per se, but, there's no way I'm not going to have to get my "fix", SOMEwhere! LOL

That decorative piece is a neat one Gary.

I know exactly what you mean. When I first started I just did open fields and yards. After my first "adventure" into the deep dark woods I was hooked. I'll post a picture of the 90lb cast iron cart wheel I dug up at 20 inches. I had to get a hand truck to get it home. I questioned whether I wanted to keep doing it but the age of the finds and being out in the quiet of nature draws me back...but no more moving finds with a hand truck...ever

I kniw exactly what you mean Whadi..I love ALL aspects of detecting, parks, schools, fields, with my favorite...old house sites. It is fun to switch up every now and then...I'll hit the fields then get tired of just swinging and head to a park or school for a clad-fest...Ddf
