Started off at a old park today but really wasn't finding much. I left the park and drove about 30 miles out to a old school in a very small town. I ended up finding a matching pair of .925 Silver Earrings...

The I took off from the school because it was getting so hot and the ground was really dry. On my way home I passed by one of, if not the most "hunted out park" in the town I was driving through. The park dates back to approx 1870's. Not to mention that this park is located really close to a old manufacturer of Metal detectors and this is where they came to test new products before release. So I know this park has been hammered to death. However, Storm armed with his trusty Minelab was able to get in between a few deep iron targets and was rewarded with some deep silver...Every bit of 10" if not more.

I do believe I think I found myself a late 1800's Love Bracelet. There are no marking of metal content, so that places it before the 1906 stamping act. At least thats what me and my hunting partner agree upon. What do you guys think? Are we on target?

UPDATE......

I took it to an antique jeweler today and there are 2 facts that they could tell me about the bracelet....

1.) It's Silver, Unmarked.
2.) It's Hand Engraved.

However for the date, she is not sure. She said that there are still a few people that hand engrave, however it is not very common. Based on the fact that people still do it, it could have been made last week LOL. However based on the depth that it was found, we both still believe that it is late 1800's - early 1900's.

Virlen is a very unusual name. perhaps it was more common years ago? a great find no matter how old, but ill bet that its turn of the century at least!

I'd rather find something unique like that than my umpteenth dozen silver coin, excellent find! The engraving is very similar to seated love tokens from the 1800's.

Great finds! I am impressed with the way you put it back in shape, you'd never even know it was straight when you found it. Great job, beautiful bracelet.

She's known for highjacking nice jewelry ~ we may have to wrestle her for it! LOL

I met up with StormTrooper today to do some detecting together. I got to see this bracelette in person ~ WOW, it is awesome! It's more impressive in person! SUPER NICE FIND MAN!!! WOOHOOO!!!!!

Love that bracelet!!!!!

From what I can gather, "Virlen" is a male name. Did a woman give this to a man? I have not found any reference to indicate that this is a woman's name....

Not finding much info on VIRLEN, but I do get hits on VERLIN....could be one in the same, could be different....just depends on who wrote down the name, court records aren't always correct, etc.....

Very hard name to research....no hits in my newspapers, and ancestry finds maybe one or two hits with the spelling of VIRLEN...lots of hits for VERLIN!!!

Searching Oregon marriage records from 1906 - 1920...two VERLIN's, no VIRLIN and last names don't match the initials.

Oregon death records from 1903 - 1998 only shows one VIRLEN (Virlen Car Warner...died in 1977)

Searching Portland, Oregon Death Index (1915 - 1924) shows a:
Verland M. MacDonald, died April 10, 1924 (Cert #997). Could this be your VIRLEN?

SSDI shows quite a few people with VIRLEN as a first name....but none in Oregon. Oldest birth date is: 1890 and youngest one listed is: 1938.

But being a bracelet, this has to have been given to a woman....thank goodness I don't have to search this person in my family history...WOW....hard to find anything.

Maybe the person who engraved it, didn't know how the person spelled their name....

okay, found reference on the census records, that it's also a females name....so, it took me awhile...LOL...but all I was getting was reference to a male name....

Interesting....

Happy Hunting,
Annmarie
