American eagle in an Iron cross...I like dingode's suggestion. Some type of service.

As I get looking around, the Maltese cross is often featured in firefighting gear.

Here is a sample.

I looked through 21 pages of fire department buttons on the Waterbury website and did not find one remotely similar to Truth's. And, a search of Maltese crosses didn't show anything close either. A search for iron cross turned up nothing.
Here's the link to Waterbury if anyone else wants to look.

I just looked through 40 pages of buttons using just the word "Eagle" and didn't find anything.

I sure will Gare I’m going to take better pictures. It says Burberry Button Co. I’ve been looking through all the Google images and I haven’t seen one like it. It’s frustrating but educational at same time

Huh! Spanish-American War. Just after that (1898) is when the VFW was created. Nice find!
