Got out today with Rick (NS) to check out a few fields and cellar holes that we were recently given permision to hunt. Rick was up by 2 coppers and a musket ball to my zip, I was starting to feel a little inadequate and decided to head back toward the car and hunt down there when BAM, I got a crystal clear silver dime signal. Dug it out and wow, a 1677 french sols, I think it is a 4 sols so I nead a little help here with weight and dimentions.

I picked up a few coppers later in the day and some other goodies plus on small peice of a tiny silver spoon. Rick killed it on the coppers that's for sure.

So nice to see something other that Spanish turn up as far as colonial silver in North America. Congrats on a special find!
The French ones are hard to find, that's for sure.

That's awesome Dave - she's a beaut!! Nothing better than colonial silver, and the fact that it's not Spanish makes it even better. Nice assortment of other finds as well.

Sweet looking silver, it sure must be good feeling to pop one like that out, great hunt.

Really nice coin! Congrats! BTW what is that knob looking thing in pic #3? I found something just like that not too long ago.

My head would probably spin right off of my body if I found that coin!!!

Great find.

Thanks Bill I hope that there will be more of those to come but I wouldn't turn my nose up at piece of spanish either.
Sunday, weather permitting we are heading out for a dive and hoping for some more Victorian gold, I like that too.

I didn't believe Rick when he told me it was a 1677 Frenchy, I thought he was messing with me. Yea it made my day, this was the first good target I dug up to then. I am still in disbelief.

The knob is a drawer pull with really nice green patina on it. I also found what appears to be a square, brass lamp base which had me pumped for a while, thought I had the guard to the sword pummel I found last week.

Nice find from Acadia! I hope they brought a couple of those down South for me to dig!

Congrats,

Congrats, that a great piece of silver. I've never had a 17th C French silver!

We hear so many stories that when the Brits kicked the Acadians out of NS in 1755 they we stealing all their silver and gold off them, so when the word got out the French started to hide and bury it around their land or in the wells. There is one story that we hear every where we go that tells of a Church bell buried with a hoard of silver and gold in it, some even say they cast the bell out of the gold but I think that might be a bit of a stretch.
A lot of french ended up in your area so I would expect that you will eventually find some down south.

Thanks Cru, you have really stoked my fires. I didn't ever imagine that I would get a coin up that you haven't all ready pulled up out of the ground. There must be some in your end of the woods.
