Wow!!!!! I started helping this guy at a local convenient store spotting silver coins where I was doing some of my CRH. I walk in there this morning and he shows me two Morgan Silver Dollars. He claims that some guy bartered with him for $30 in gas. The guy at the store wants to sell them to me for $50.00 and I told him that they are worth more than that in silver. I look at them and he has an 1884 S Morgan Silver Dollar. I almost fainted, hahahaha. To my knowledge, the 1884 S is the most expensive Morgan, correct? It is in awesome shape! I gotta help this guy!

1. 2 Morgans for $50 is just under spot (which only recently spiked up), nothing to get excited about. I would pass, expecially considering it sounds like many posters don't know how to spot fakes.
2. SLY22: 1/4 of your collection consists of fake Morgans? WOW!
3. Those of you who are getting preachy about honesty and greed. Please remember that you are on a TREASURE HUNTING website!

The way i look at it is. It takes mere minutes to research what a Morgen is worth in silver value alone and only seconds longer to see the intrinsic value of the coin by typing the date in the Internet. If people are that lazy and naive to have a 100+ year old coin and not think it just might be worth something. Than I think finding a deal off these people isnt amoral at all. Heck all the reading and studying is for something right? They obviously aren't doing it. Its also not like your taking them for something they worked for and earned, otherwise they would know the value of what they have.

I went to see the guy at the store yesterday after work. The magnet revealed that the coin is in fact silver as the coin didn't stick to the magnet. I'm very new to all of this stuff, fellas. However, I'm having a blast and it's good to see others that are able to benefit from the CRH craze as well. He wants to give me the coin to have it appraised for him. I know a guy that will be very honest. We shall see....

You can get those Morgans most anywhere for the same price. If your completely in love with those two, then I would say to go for it. You can find the same or better condition coins at you local coin store for about similar cost. I wouldn't give him redbook price for those no way. I wouldn't rip him off but if hes asking you to get them appraised he already seems to want retail price for them. Sounds like you got him excited about his possible fortune. I would say pass on the deal.

ps. The magnet test only rules out that they are not made of a metal that is attracted like steel. It doesn't mean that it is definatly made of silver.

I was under the impression that the 1884 S could potentially be worth in the thousands. That's why I was so excited for this guy. So much more to learn.

I think you ridea of taking them to someone who can value them is a good one. Let an expert decide if they are real or not. If not, the worst that can happen is the guy lost a little bit of gasoline money. If they are real, then you have a wonderful deal. Good luck with them. :-)

Then why don't you give them spot when you pick it up from the tellers?

Tellers know exactly how much is in my boxes?

If I could get tellers to search and dump for me, I'd gladly buy everything they found at 80-85% of spot and flip it for easy profit. I look for win/win situations in life, you won't get anywhere pissing everybody else off once they figure out what you're up to. There's only so many people you can alienate before you're the last person left.

Any sagly advice on spotting fakes?

Most modern fakes are made out of non-magnetic alloys. Magnet isn't the only way to know if it's fake or not. You have to know what real morgans look like and compare them.

yeah - weight - and ring test - diameter - thickness - ----1/4 of my morgans are not fakes. My fakes are neatly stowed in my "diversion drawer" for any would be thefts.... along with a clad proof set.

lol
People on a CRH forum are getting upset about someone getting a couple morgans for $50?
Am I the only one that sees humor in this?

The whole "I just need some gas" is one of the oldest tricks in the books.

You can see low lifes walking around areas of downtown with empty small gasoline canisters, saying they just need 5 bucks to fill it up to make it Kent.

Throw some collectable coins in the mix, and it isn't much a stretch to image some foul play. Especially with gas station attendants. You don't necessarily need a rocket science degree to pull one off on them. Especially, if you visit 3 or 4 stations.

jerseyben- no none of my morgans are fake (unless they are faked by someone with a press). i know what to look for in a fake. a magnet works for real bad fakes (that i can spot without using a magnet) but a decent fake i have to look at under a spy glass. after a few seconds of looking i can spot a fake.
now there are super fakes out there that no even a expert could spot... so if they cant spot them, they must be real!? hahaha

i have to share this... i often go to my local pawn shops asking for silver american coins (most know me by name). after walking in one afternoon the owner lit up and said "i have something to show you!" i brought my spy glass and magnet (magnet about the size of a hockey puck) in with me. he set the bag of morgans, halfs, silver eagles on the desk near my magnet... BAM magnet flew against the bag. after looking through the entire bag and testing/looking at each coin, not a single one was real. id say around 60-70 face value. i have no idea if he knew or got taken by the seller but either way someone somewhere got screwed

Me personally I say let's give the guy a break. Maybe he got them and they are %100 real. The way I looking at it is one more person collecting now. That is a grand thing.

This is like a treasure hunt for silver, u want the least amount of compition in ur area seems like common sense in the hunting world

tellers vs private persons -- big differance -- tellers work for a bussiness ---aka -- banks * its the "banks coins" not the tellers "private stock" -- the teller is just "handling the transaction" - nothing more == however "good tellers" who you made made a "connection" with and who you have "trained" tip you off with a phone call when a large amount of customer coins (halves, large dollars and such) get dummped --often get a bit of choclate from me--- ala sheldon from " the big bang theory" see you can train people via "positive reeforcement" 9he gives penny chocolate , whenever she does sommething he likes.

a bank teller is just the "middle man / woman " --they are just handling "the banks coins" --its not their private stash , no matter how much they think it is ---now one can "train" tellers to be good little tellers --via the sheldon (from big bang theory) method -- a bit of "chocolate" given anytime penny does stuff he likes , he gives her a piece of chocolate ==aka "positive reenforcement"--properly trained tellers will call you when "large amounts" of halves or large dollar coins get dumped or other "interesting coins show up .

to screw over what in most cases is a "hard up" little iold lady or man (a private person with no ideal of the coins worth at all) is thought of by many as low down and heartless -- banks are a lousy bussiness and they screw folks all the time , so hosing a bank is worthy of a medal *by most folks point of veiw ---however screwing over your fellow human beings not so nice.

its a morals / judgement call -- some folks are totally ruthless and their greed has no limit and they will do ANYTHING to ANYONE to make a buck , their motto is ---screw the world so long as I get mine (these folks tend to have no freinds and are not to be trusted ever) -- others have a bit of heart and will pass on some making money methods that require you to do utterly nasty things.--

as I have often said --yes , I am a hustler but I am not a con artist nor a theif.
