Wow!!!!! I started helping this guy at a local convenient store spotting silver coins where I was doing some of my CRH. I walk in there this morning and he shows me two Morgan Silver Dollars. He claims that some guy bartered with him for $30 in gas. The guy at the store wants to sell them to me for $50.00 and I told him that they are worth more than that in silver. I look at them and he has an 1884 S Morgan Silver Dollar. I almost fainted, hahahaha. To my knowledge, the 1884 S is the most expensive Morgan, correct? It is in awesome shape! I gotta help this guy!

Depending on the condition of the coin determine the value. I will say this there is more fakes out there this day and time than they are real ones. Would for sure examine the coin greatly, weight, strike and many other things. This is not the king of the Morgan's though.

magnet test.

The "Haggler" may have been knowingly passing off fake morgans.

If you have a rare morgan from a strange spot...Guess what? Good chance it's fake.

Then-again, I do not know your expertise, and you could very well have eyeballed a perfectly fine, and rare, morgan!

beware there are some con artist that roam around selling "fake morgans" or highly worn common morgans at a'mark up" to folks at gas stations --claiming to be broke and "needing gas" which is the only reason they are willing to part with such family heirlooms --they then trade off or sell the coins to folks -- use a magnet on them to be sure they are not plated fakes -- and watch the coins condition as well when they ask $25 or $30 bucks for a highly worn common date silver --you basically buying 72% of a oz at 1 oz spot price

The 1884-S, unless it's in phenomenally good shape, is worth about $34 or so on Ebay, about the same as other morgans. IF they're real I'd buy 2 morgans for $50. Not a steal, but a good deal. He got a real good deal (once again if they're real) at $15 apiece. Just bring a real copy of a morgan with you, and also a clad half so you can compare tones

I still would have gave the guy the 50 dollars in gas, if the coin was real. I need to get a magnet for myself. My dad has morgan dollars from 1889, 1880 and I tell you what, unless we were going to loss our house, there is nothing that would make me sell those. I rather sell my silver than sell my dad's dollar coins. but I have gotten a 1900 dollar from someone who was buying groceries. At the time I didn't have time to tell him it was worth more, being thanksgiving weekend, so I took the coin and switched it out for a dollar. But what a great find! I wish they would make magnets in holders so you can keep them in your pocket without worrying about them messing up your credit cards.

Sincerely, Garoulady

I keep a strong magnet on my keychain. Never know when you could use one. :)

HH!

Great advice, fellas! Thanks for all the great information. I'm going to head down to the store and tell guy to check the coins with a magnet.

Y would u tell someone there worth more if ur gonna get them cheap

i have TONS of morgans. 25% are fakes and key dates are more likely suspect. the magnet test only works on bad fakes. you have to look real close for bubbles in the fluting. most of the time fakes are cast. and if a fake is struck, more than likely even experts dont know the difference

Then why don't you give them spot when you pick it up from the tellers?

See how far that gets you in life... history is littered with examples of individuals who let greed consume them and compromise their morals.

And I'm sure if ur at a yard sale, see a silver braclet in a box for a dollar can garuntee ur not gonna say a word.

Sorta what's wrong with society today, ain't it. We've gone from trust, respect and honesty to the buy me, give me, get me, take me world of today. He who dies with the most toys wins!

It's like vetarun said u wouldn't give a teller the silver value, u wanna pay face value of a coin. That's the idea of all this last time I checked. There's no difference from getting these from a bank teller or a store clerk.
