Oh, it's real, and it's spectacular, but what is it?
It didn't take me long to weary of trying to find an old privy at my aunt's place today. I picked up the detector and hiked across the road to a relative of her's (but not mine) and tried my luck again; I've been picking up some modern silver there the last few weeks. Today started out mostly clad, including a modern three quarter drop about three inches down. The owner pulled up to unload some stuff and had his little boy with him. Little boy was showing intense interest and happened to be there for two of the three quarters so I gave them to him. He also tallied a junk wheat a few minutes later. Before he left, the owner, who had inherited the place from his father, told me of an attic find he made while insulating. Let's just say it was five pounds of Walkers, Washingtons, Franklins, dimes, etc. in silver . I mentioned some of the coins to look for, and he's apparently found at least one 32D Washington. That, we agreed, should never be sold for it's silver! They left, and suddenly my luck changed. I got a very nice quarter/half dollar signal and had to move some rocks around in the hole, but suddenly I was face to face with a 3" 'wreath' of metal. Looked oddly to me like silver, then I noticed the tiny letters that spelled out "Sterling." You'll notice that the subsequent 45 Washington, 42 Merc and Sterling ring all fit inside. What was it? The ring is missing a stone, which I searched the hole in vain for. Not likely to have been a diamond, right? Ended up with over a buck in clad, a couple modern wheats and four pieces of silver. Not bad for a day that was so windy I could barely hear the detector at times; no, I don't use the headphones much.
