Maybe a type of vintage door stop / bumper?

Similar to this:

But then again, your seems a little to light weight for a door. Could be a smaller door or cabinet?
Just thinking out loud.......

I agree, bottom half of window lock. I'm looking at the one on my window and it looks identical.

I just can't picture it as a lock. A photo would sure help. Would you take a picture of yours?

Hello all, thanks for the great responses but I agree with vhs07. I can't see how this was supposed to work as part of a window lock. Looked on the internet but can't find a window lock like it. Anyone got a pic of this? HH C9

I don't have a picture of the lock, but I have seen the same lock on buildings built in the 20's-30's. As best I remember it went on the bottom of the window and the lock swiveled over it to prevent it from being raised.

Anita is right on target. It is a window lock. I lived in a house that had them and in 5 years I never figured out how the thing really worked.

This piece is stationary .. I fail to see how it could serve as any part of a window latch .. hopefully Anita or somebody can post a photo, or, maybe Austin can submit a sketch.

Thanks Anita ..Which one is similar? I don't see anything that even remotely looks like it, but that isn't all that unusual for me.

On closer examination of your pix, I am not sure now if it is in fact a window sash latch piece. Huh. Does your piece have any screw holes? Sorry if I've lead you on a wild goose chase. My window locks are actually the generic brass sash locks on page 1 of the website I sent you. They don't look anything like your find. Sorry! My bad...I will keep trying to figure this one out. It's intriguing me.

HH,
Anita

The piece pictured goes on the bottom of the window. It screws into the bottom of the part of the window that raises, it sets flush with the sill. There is a "lock" on the window sill that pivots over the ball like end of the aforementioned and pictured mystery item. It makes for a simple and effective window lock. As best I remember they were on old weighted windows.

Thanks for the info .. darn .. with the power of the net, you would think there would be a picture of one somewhere .. hundreds here, but just can't find anything that matches.

It IS an old window lock as I suspected. Found it on EBay:

Windows, Sashes Locks | eBay

Item is called: "3 Antique vintage brass & cast iron window holder hardware patent applied for".

Hope we can put a SOLVED next to this one!
