Firstly, I realize the pics suck, My apologies. I'll try and get better pics to replace these soon. I'm just trying to maybe get some info out of this. To me it looks like chert. But I have no clue. What is odd to me is that it looks like an unfinished point or a spear tip that was broken Then maybe it was napped in one of the broken areas. The smooth red lines are the area that has an obvious blade and the broke section is broke clean off and almost 1/4" thick in the middle. It sparkled in the sun light which is what caught my eye. Also it is translucent around the edges. Found in Surry, Va on edge of a cotton field. Any thoughts? This is my first native american find since I've been searching the ground my whole life so I'm a bit excited. Or maybe its just a rock thats playing tricks on me.

Kind of hard to tell what you got there . Does look like it might have been worked. Just a guess, but the material looks like some kind of quartzite to me?

O.k. Finally got better pics added. After looking it up, I agree with it being quartzite.

Looks like a base to a knife missing the sharp end from what I can tell.

I agree. After looking through many examples it closely resembles a knife. Now I hope to find a point or knife intact. Thanks for the replies. This is going to be a fun new hobby.

What you have is no doubt an artifact, It's hard to tell what it was but it could have been a point that broke like that on impact . I also go along with Rock on a small knife blade, it's hard to say what was done by use or the plow. Great find for your 1st keep hunting.

I'd like to run across the other piece for sure. There's pottery shards and glass and I even found a silver 8 reale there once 1677. Its no telling whats out there. But the hunt for points is ON!!!
