i live in north carolina,my dad found this on a peice of property near Durham NC. the property had a house on it that we have been told predated the civil war and was used during the war as an infirmary, the house was dismantled anyway long story short we really have no idea what this is only a cpl of guesses. it is very heavy 8lbs. either iron or cast iron. the top of it is jagged and appears to have broken off of something. i will include several photos one has a quarter in it for perspective, also there are no visible id marks on it. any help or guesses will be appreciated thank you

Could be the rear barrel finial from a field piece. It's about the right size and shape. Google Civil War cannon pictures.

OK some good ideas but at 8lbs it kinda heavy for a bell clanger, gate closer or a post top isnt it? and if it was for a scale wouldnt there be some markings of somekind on it? just asking thanks for everyones help. did look at the cannon knob idea and it looks alot like that and the dimensons look close also

I'll throw my two cents in. Looks like a broken off top to a fire place andiron. Normally they are brass but some are iron.

They hit it with the balance weight for a scale.

i looked into that idea. what bothers me about it is the bevel around the top. and the fact that it weighs in at 8lbs. those scales according to my research says the weights came in 1,2,5,10 and 20lb sizes. so the odd size makes me question that thought and the ring arond the top. so ?????

Could be a special ordered weight for a hardware. Local blacksmith could have made it for a merchant for possibly weighing out black powder, flour, molasses, nails, leather, the possibilities are endless......NGE
