I went back to the site where I have continually found colonial artifacts and coins over the last few years. As I left, I was sure I got skunked. Not even an Indian Head!

As I was going through the trash I had found, I noticed the slight circular shape on this thin copper piece. I carefully brushed it and realized it is a keeper for sure. I have no idea what it is or it's age, but it is definitely old. It has a monogram on the top of the obverse, either F.V.B. or H.V.B. I cant tell for sure what the design on the reverse is, or what it means.

Does anyone have a clue what this object might be?

(Penny is for size comparison)

Not sure what it is, but it may be H'Y'B. Not sure but I think I see the tail of the Y? Looks early 1800s maybe just before.

Pretty dang cool I'd say.

Looks hand engraved...I'd guess one of a kind most likely what ever it is.

Well it looks to me like whomever carved that design into it started on the back, carved in the mountains and creek, and started on the house (got the roof done), but messed up, then used that side for practice and flipped the thing over and did the cabin scene there, encircling it with a round, ornate border when they were done. If I'm seeing this right, the cabin on the back is unfinished, right?

My guess? Someone wanted something to do to pass the time. Then they put their initials on it. Maybe given as a gift to a visitor to the carver's home?

Regards,

Or maybe, as a person in another forum suggested it was a way for a weary traveler to remember his home in the days before photography. I did not notice the unfinished cabin on the back, but perhaps it is another view of the cabin from a different angle, all but the roof hidden behind a hill?
