It would take a lot of precision to make a coin that many sided and have all the sides even and equal. It is certainly beautiful and time consuming work if it was indeed altered. (Try doing this yourself, and you'll see what I mean!!) I'm not saying it couldn't have been altered...just that it would have been difficult to get that fine and even of a result. Seriously though, check the motto. I mentioned it on an earlier post. Is the third word of the motto "We" or "Our"? If it were the latter, that might settle a few things.

Thanks for all the comments. I can't read the spot where "we" belongs. It looks worn off to me. I didn't want to clean it any more than I did (I just ran it under water).
The sides do look a little uneven, but it is not fat around the rim from hammering and the edge feels so perfect. If it was hammered, the person did a great job.
Thanks for emailing it to someone Gypsy. I can't wait to hear.
Thanks again,
Mark G

I recieved an answer back from Julian at

His answer is ........

............I believe that this was done outside of the mint, Chris, as I am unaware of any authentic coin like this. Hope that this helps.

Burt, you are brilliant...making the Longacre (SBA) connection!

I'm of the opinion that most if not all of the US significant patterns are of the round variety, not to mention, I'm certain that if this coin were a significant pattern, the owner would have known it and it would not have the "wear" or circulated look that this coin shows.

Regardless, in similiar condition, I'd take this coin over a round one! It has character and has more of a story to tell....dang, if only this coin could talk!

It's an oddity allright. I think taht without an examination of the coin under microscopy, which would tell if the coin had been worked, (hammered), then giving an opinion is difficult. The odds say post-mint but its certainly worth investigating. A very interesting coin to say the least.

Hi Gypsy
Thanks for going out of your way and investigating the 2 cent coin that I posted. I looked at it last night for some time, and the shape does appear to be post mint, but done very carefully. When I picked it out of the ground, TnT was next to me and I said look another 2 center, but this one is dented. Then I realized it was dented all the way around. I couldn't wait to get home and look at the Red Book. It is still a special find for me, regardless of the value.
Thanks again.
Mark

PS I tried to PM this to you to make sure you received my thanks, but the system says your inbox is full.

Nice find and keep checking until you do know, many collect error or odd coins and even publications concerning those error and odd. I found a silver 1992-D dime and if I believed most who first looked I would not have traded it for a DFX. Hopefully your find isn't hammered and is a unique coin!!
