After my rather unsuccessful hunt and being harassed at the BM Estate yesterday, I decided to pick up Elijah (my dog) and take him, my detector and my hopes of finding something in DT. About an hour into the hike by the "Ancient Oak", Elijah (Golden, Weim and Rottie mix, that looks like a black lab) started growling and literately walking up against my leg. He has done this before, when bears are present. This time it wasn't a bear, it was a mountain lion, yes a *mountain lion...in fear of my dogs and my life, I drew out my **pistol (yes, I have a concealed carry) and fired two warning shots away from the animal...We immediately left afterwards...When I returned home, made a call to the NY DEC to report the siting for safety concerns, they pretty much poo poo'ed the idea and said they will get somebody to look into it when available..

Now, isn't it the responsibility of law enforcement to follow through on complaints made and not "poo-poo" reports when others have had similar sightings? I am going back today and setting up five trail cams to see if I can catch anything, so I can shove it in the face of the DEC.

* See above of the reports of mountain lion sightings and they concur with what I saw.
** I usually carry in remote areas in which I hike and hunt, especially when I am with my little puppy man.

The mountain lion probably reported you as well.
Man and dog found wandering in the woods today..........should have seen them run.....:laughing7:

MuckyBottles,

What's scarier my friend is when you complete your walk, having left bootprints in the dirt while walking, and you are walking back to your vehicle on the same dirt road, only to see mountain lion paw prints OVER your bootprints in the dirt and that goes on for most of your dirt road walk back. Been there, done that!

you have nothing to fear but fear it self
that is one of gods greatest creation Ive seen them around here in the U.P of Michigan
and I consider my self very lucky to see one
it doesn't take "white man' very long to devastate animals population

look at what Monsanto's is doing to the human population
just devastating it

Seeing them in MI is one thing, seeing them 40 miles from NYC is another. Furthermore having NY Dept of Environmental Conservation deny it is the biggest problem. What if I didn't have my dog and/or my sidearm?

Up in my area, we have an abundance of coy dogs and coyotes. The DEC has released what they call barn wolfs, the only natural enemy of the coy dogs and coyotes. They look like a large german shepard and weigh about 90 - 100 lbs. I got this info from a friend, who is a DEC Officer. I was also told that this was a hush hush type deal, and they would deny any knowledge of this. My wife and I, along with neighbors, have seen them pretty regularly, but have not been able to get a picture of them. As Animal Control Officers for our area, we have noticed a decline in complaints on the coy dogs and coyotes in our area since the introduction of the barn wolfs.

The DEC in NY is not your friend and will deny any lion reports….BUT if you ask them, since they do not exist here can I shoot it…….guess the response.
There have been credible reports of lions and tracks for a few years that I am aware of in western upstate NY………seem to becoming more frequent also…..
The DEC is likely complicit in this also…….as evidenced with the barn wolf and many other incidents……

I would not have wasted 2 shots, I would have wasted the cat. Its not legal to shoot them here in Pa, and they deny their existance. But if I ever get the chance, Ill thump one. Flatlanders don't like to hear that, but their kids and pets don't live on the mountain like we do.

Local Game officials told me they don't exist in breedable quanties here in Pa, Can't shot em because they're endangered species. The photo I showed them must have been an immaculate conception.

We gotta talk about Claudius too. I have an interesting story.

You sound concerned but I don't get it. You saw a mountain lion. You reported it to LEO and they didn't do anything. Why would they? Nothing happened, other than you saw a mountain lion, and since I live in a part of the country populated by lions, I can pretty much assure you that was a mistake on the lion's part. I don't really think you were in any danger at all. The cat might have been aggravated or annoyed by your dog, but wouldn't have done anything as long as the dog hid behind you and kept its distance. That concealed carry license is probably the thing to have there in New York, but you could have yelled and chased the cat off as it was probably more scared than you were. I don't get what your concern is but congratulations on seeing a mountain lion up close, as most folks never see one. But remember this, they are always watching you when you're in their neighborhood.

if you go without your dog or gun, take a large bottle of ketchup. At least give the lion a good meal.
( get a hat with eyes on the back, they won't follow you then)

Here kitty kitty, should only take one shot. image.jpg

RGINN said it best. I live in Montana and I can assure you that these animals are not an endangered species as was mentioned by another poster. Consider yourself lucky to have seen one in the wild. Not many deaths to humans from Mountain lions in the US. They are easy to frighten off.

I lived in Suffolk, Va. a few years ago. The Great Dismal Swamp was on fire in 2008 and the smoke reached as far as Norfolk. I was standing on the balcony of my apartment with my oldest daughter who was 17 at the time.

I glanced down and I was shocked to see a large Mountain Lion standing at the base of the building and looking up at us. I yelled at it and it took off running across the field behind the building. The thing covered 200 yards in about 15 seconds.

My daughter was standing there with her mouth agape. I asked her what SHE saw and she said that she saw a Puma.

I called the Suffolk Police to report this and they said since I wasn't a trained observer, it must have been a large housecat. When I told them in a very rude manner that I was a former Deputy Sheriff and a US Army Special Forces Soldier, their tone changed and the had Animal Control come out.

AC told me that there IS a population of Mountain Lions in the Great Dismal Swamp and that they must be looking for safety from the fire. When they found tracks, they set live traps to try and catch the thing. (It never was caught.)

If I hadn't seen one myself, I would have thought that both you and I were crazy, but I tell you this...Mountain Lions ARE on the East Coast!

We should all have more respect for creation.....animals....people....etc.
The mentality of shoot at everything you're afraid of and then hang it on a wall......is not respect for anything.
One day we may end up on someone's wall..........then we would have a better understanding.
I like cats....some people like dogs.....they're all good.
Ok....everybody hold hands now and sing "cum-ba-ya"! Brothers and sisters...........
