Went to a field that's yielded buttons and some older coins in the past. Man, what nice weather today! Within a few minutes the first button came out! Then another, so it looked like it was the right area to start in. Shortly later a piece came out that I think is an old watch fob? Can anyone ID it? At first it looked like a seal, but the stone at the end killed that idea. Ended the day with 17 buttons.

BUT WHERE WERE THE OLD COINS? Snuck out two wheat cents, an 1865 IHC and 1943-P WTN. Was hoping for some older coins to show up, but still got plenty of goodies! Any idea what that half-crumbled lead (pewter?) thing is?

HH all!

Still really looks like a seal, any chance that an imprint that may have been on it, wore off?
Killer day, any 1860's Indians are always a good thing!
Carl

Killer finds.:hello:

1865 IH sounds like nice old coin to me.can't beat it good weather and plenty of good finds.congrats

If there's nothing carved in the stone on the object that looks like a seal, then what is it? I would not dismiss the importance of that object... keep looking for an answer as to what it was used for!!!!!

Great finds! Congrats! HH!

That so called seal object looks like it has some gold showing... was it gold plated?

A war nickel and a Indian alone are great finds in my book, I think that pewter piece is a woman's broach. AND then, all those buttons, man you had a great day of detecting there. There is much more at that place, low and slow, your going to find a few more of those cool coins.

Nice assortment of buttons, looks like you had a great day.

sure looks like a wax seal thing to me

Nice finds, that is a fob wax seal. I found one similar about a year or two ago.

Here is part of a reply from Crusader about my blank stoned seal: "They became a fashion statement, only the rich had Seals, but the upwardly mobile working class/merchant/trader/middle class wore them around the neck to look more important than they were. They were never used, the blank one that is."

Since that reply, later on I did read that sometimes the blank seal was used in conjunction with a signature, making it appear more legal perhaps? But anyway, no doubt that was a Fob Seal that was worn around the neck.

Thanks for all of the comments! It really was a good day detecting! Was hoping for that large can't to pop out too but it was a memorable day overall

Oops! Didn't mention that but it does have some gold plating remaining. I took a video right out when it was found and noted it there but I guess that doesn't help when the video isn't posted here, haha.

Looking on eBay there were similar style watch fobs so that's also why I'm leaning away from the seal part. The face of the stone looks to only be flat and couldn't see any design on it. I can try taking a focused pic of it later today.

Nice job on the fob!

They came in designed versions simple and intricate. Plain ones do exist

The crumbly thing is the remnants of a bridle rosette

Nice finds! If you found an 1860's Indian in there, there are probably silvers (Seated and other). Lots of buttons there. Do you think it was a paper mill? Is the spot near a river?

Hi Don! Thanks for your post! I apologize that I woke up and replied five minutes later. But I wasn't awake and hadn't read all of the replies. Guess it goes to show you should be awake before responding!
