Notched axe

I've seen some Flint ones. I've also seen some other stones that people call axe heads but look more like net weights.

Gator, I showed him my guilford axe, which looks really close to the one you posted on the right. He said not close. I don't think it's an axe that he has. I'll surely post it when he brings it. He was a biology teacher then went on to be principal of the high school. He's retired now, but a really smart guy. I can't wait to see what he brings back.

Yeah me too now. Neogeo just posted a nice one in the thread "Back in the dirt"

The other pic you posted could pass as sinker. Going by the pic!

He said he thought it was chert. That is probably like it in the black dirt thread. Thanks for pointing that out. Wouldn't that be a flaked Celt or adze of some sort?

That's what I said when I posted it. Although it was being described as an axe on a website I think it is a net weight.

Here are 2 notched axes from Rhode Island. The first at 6 1/2" and the second at 7 1/2". These are classified with full groove axes here in southern New England and are Archaic in age. These are not personal finds.Kingston, RI Axe 006.jpgKingston, RI Axe 011.jpgNotched Axe 006.JPGNotched Axe 007.JPG

Thanks for the post. I see the difference between notched and grooved now. What is the age of the notched axe? Mid to late archaic?

2nd pic is definitely Guilford ax

Nice axes and explanations . I found a Gulliford point that Neanderthal typed for me. Strange looking point. Good looking axes

Let's see it bro. I love guilford and guilford yuma points.

Creek tumbled at 4'' long. I just looked it up and does not appear to look like what I was looking at. Is that a Guilford?

If Matt typed it for you, I hate to dispute it. However, I don't think it is a guilford. Their are variants of the guilford point, but I still don't see it there. Give me a few, and I'll post a couple variations that I have found. One type does have a rounded base, but I have never seen that base on a stemmed guilford. Nice odd piece you have for sure.
