The vat description at the below site seems to match... but I don't understand why they would want the sharp drop off at one end? Maybe so the animals would splash down into it, assuring that their heads got covered with the stuff too?

I think we have a winner.. :icon_thumright: I am also curious about the purpose of the sharp drop-off end... :icon_scratch:

Given the slope of the land and the length and width of the foundation I'd be more inclined to think semipermanent location for a sawmill.Skidway above and product going off downhill.
Cattle handling facilities wouldn't typicaly have been built along a slope if there was better ground available to facilitate handling.

Good idea Truckinbutch, the location would lend itself to that. All the timber from clearing the fields could be utilized and even the area shown in the picture has been logged by the small second growth trees present. Nice spot for a sawmill check her out for relics.

Just my 2 cents worth. You mentioned a small stream near by.Maybe it was diverted for a waterwheel?

Thank you, makes perfect sense .The dimensions in your article are the same as the one that I found. Also somewhat dates the farm next to it. Mark this one down as solved

Still think it's a saw pit.
Saw one just like it in Robbins a few years ago.
Narrow and about 5 foot deep with a slope on one side and a steep incline to none on the other. Like it was designed to be used from one side only. Dangerous thing to almost fall in while hunting deer.

Either way it's old enough to check with the MD for cool stuff.

I feel the same except my cousin got off easy when he got caught hauling a few rocks out of a national forrest. They sat there and whatched him put every single rock back where he got them. If it wasn't for the fact that he was just a highschool kid, they would've nailed him with a few fines.
