Our object could be something as simple as a guide for reins on a horse drawn carriage. You passed the reins through it and jammed it into an 8 sided socket on the coach and it kept you from climbing through the horses untangling the lines every time you stopped or one of the horses
balked.

Doc
doc i think your right,, rein guides,, i got it over on whites forum too,, and somebody said rein guides,, but i havent been able to find a pic of one yet,, and yeah i did find 2,, so rein guide is very probable

OK. How about this? Not a flag carrier, but an old rod holder for fishing?

Mike

Much longer and bigger in diameter, and sharper to punch in the ground, or what have you, and not made out of a pricey thing like brass, right?

Doc

I'm not talking about a beach rod holder. Slide a belt through the handle, fit the base into a swivel seat socket, and reel away! And how much antique nautical equipment was made out of "pricey brass"?

O.K., so the rod twists inside this "rod holder" and the "rod Holder" with it's 8 sides locks into a socket in the boat. Doesn't look like very much rod would fit in, might snap the pole if you got a big one, don't you think??
Worn all the way through where the "Hnadle" is, I find that curious.
Regards,
Doc

OOOH! I just saw the wheatie! I was too intent on the item! This is MUCH too small for a rod holder. This thing is about 3.75" long and about .75" at the small end. It's definitely not a rod of any type holder.

I think it would be too small for a rein guide as well. My Gfather raised Tennessee Walkers and Sulkie Racers. Even had a couple of National Champions. I believe it would be so narrow, that even one set of reins would bind, and not be able to travel freely. I think the sharp edges of the handle hole would cut through the leather.

maybe a candle holder? Right size. Handle would facilitate carrying without molten wax getting on hand. Hole by handle would help dig molten candle stubs out of the base, which would fit into a socket holder of some type.

Fishing Rod Handle ?

Sorry Jeff, missed your post. I thought the same thing for awhile, but look at the penny in the picture. It's very small.

the " [ " looks like it's only 2 pennies long.

a Belt would fit through though.

But..... I could see a Bambboo
rod Fit in the open end Nicely.

But does that rule it out ? Childrens rod ?
We're Probably way off :P, But..... I could see a Bambboo
rod Fit in there Nicely.

The way I think it would work for a fishing rod holder would be like ones used in a fighting chair. A leather or canvas belt fed through the handle and fastened around the waist. The rod butt goes into the object, and the object fits into a swivel socket of similar shape. With a rod of such a small size to fit in the holder would only be suitable for small fish. WAAAY too much overkill for a small rod for small fish.

Beautiful! Explains why you found two as well! Case solved!

Sweet find and it looks to be a perfect match to the puzzle. So that would definitely explain the wear on your piece. I could not accept the theory of the leather reins causing such wear on your metal piece. Metal on metal is much moreacceptable.

Still a great find

considering the work that a single tree does then I must assume that it is for pigmy horses. The rod would only be as thick as your finger.

Too funny! When I saw this first posted a couple days ago, I remembered the "whiffletree end" hoo-ha from a few months back (wasn't that your find GypsyHeart?). Thought to myself, that sure looks like a different type of the same item. And as Doc noted, I saw what appeared to be wear from reins or such. I even figured the octagonal ends were formed by the piece being swaged down on a wooden shaft and accounted for two being found since each end would have one. Sure wish I'd have thrown that out two days ago...then I'd have looked like one of the pros on this forum!! <smile>

Great job to all (as usual)...
