I'm sorry fill me in on HCL I'm new at this :(

This is a calcitic stalagmite or stalactite. HCL is a acid. Also called muriatic acid. Calcite just like all other minerals are chemically made up of elements. Calcite is CaCO3. When you introduce HCL to CaCO3 the acid chemically breaks down the mineral. When the HCL breaks the mineral down it fizzes. It's a simple test to see if the mineral you are dealing with is actually calcite. You can find muriatic acid in your local hardware store. You should make a 5 percent solution to test on rocks and minerals. Be careful the fumes are very dangerous. Read instructions carefully.
