Not sure what this is? Found at a base of a very old tree. Use to be a horse farm. Any ideas?

I'm guessing that some were tapered and some weren't?the problem I have with a hardy tool is the taper , once hammered on, it would be hard to remove from the anvil . google images of hardy tools and you don't see that taper like the relic has.
Kinda sounds like it could be this based on the slotted grooves in the sides.Depends on the anvil, Ours (vintage) was for blacksmithing and horse shoes. the holes in the anvil was both with a taper and and the hole on toward the end it had strait walls when inserted the device stuck out threw the bottom and you had to reach under the anvil and give the selected cutter a tap to remove it.
