I have a similar piece... a whatsit... if I can find it and it's the same, I'll also post a pic... :-\

10 Minutes goes by...

Okay - I found it... it's exactly 4 inches long, crushed a little, and exactly what you found without the "T" bar handle things or any insert.

I dug mine in a field near an Indian War soldier's training area mid 1860s through late 1890s. There has also been farming & cattle activities there ever since.

I have NO idea what it is but thought some more pics might help.

Jeez I hope someone knows! :D

It looks like it regulates a flow of some kind, like fuel or air. I’ve seen valves and passages that look similar in carburetors. It might be a part to a lantern or stove, or something like that.

Well, we know it wasn't a periscope if it was found in Montana LOL. I've also marked "19th c. Hole Hog" off my list. This one's got me stumped.

could be an old lantern wick knob used to lengthen and lower the wick?

Until you posted the size I was gonna suggest it was part of a house jack...but I sure struck out on that. I'm inclined to agree with the others that it's a regulator of some type.

Where's Gypsy and PBK when ya need 'em?
