I have been digging a bit over the past few days in an area near my house in Mass. I have found several shell dumps complete with tons of flakes, some broken and very crude pieces and a few nice points. I went out for a bit today and found this in among the shells. At first I looked right past it but then I picked it up and it looked worked. Most certainly not finished but the smoothish bottom, pecked appearance and general shape make me think it could be something. I am obviously no expert and could be making a fool of myself by posting a rock but I was wondering what you all thought?

I'm going to have to disagree with you fellers on the unfinished theory I believe that its smooth on one side and has an uneven bit because it was where the use wear happened .

It looks like there is extra material towards the center of the bit.

Could be as SO says but I have yet to see a finished Celt or Ax that has the rough exterior as this one does. If you have ever seen one like it please by all means show one. I find it very interesting

I would like to see a good pic of what looks like the blade end. The pic of the smoother side does look like a celt and what might be a bit but if not for that pic I would think it is a rock shaped like a celt. The pitting on the rest of it looks way too deep for what available tools of the time (rock?) would be cutting into it. If one were pecking it out I think the surface would be smoother because you would not be taking large enough amounts off to cause such large divets. Unless this is another "exfoliated" type thing like that axe recently that was said to be exfoliated. And it could be is why I would like to see a better angle pic of the bit end.

When you get a chance you should look up Celts found in your area and see if the type of stone is the same.
