Not quite sure what i've got here...

I'm new to the forum and thought that maybe you guys could help. I always have my eye out for things while I bike and normally find "normal" things like money etc, but my recent find has me stumped...Its a poor picture and i'll upload a different one when i get my real camera unpacked but this was a camera phone shot i sent to my dad last night. Both ends look similar to this, and the sides have a few gashes where the metal(?) is smooth. Any help in identifying it would be appreciated. Thanks for any help, and let me know if you'd like any more info. It's the coolest paperweight i've come across thus far...hoping for a bit more :).
Thanks
-Dan

More views, and something to give us a better size reference Weight, looks cool though

Thanks! I'll add some better quality ones when i get home. Weighs about 3lbs if i had to guess, sadly i don't have an accurate scale to know for sure yet. Wanted to test the waters here to see if it was worth pursuing.

Shattered Aluminum? :dontknow: Interesting, I would like to know, good eye picking that up!

Welcome pacewithme. Cast iron window weights break looking just like that. Crystallized. Does a magnet stick to it? Judging by the gauges it may have been broken up by a backhoe.

No noticeable magnetism with it. Thanks for trying to help! Google images hasn't been too helpful but there are so many possibilities.

Possibly cast aluminum then. It would scratch fairly easy it's aluminum. No telling what it may have been part of. Where did you find it? Any clues there?

No good clues, was off on the side of a road near a bike path i take to work in IL. They have been doing some deep digging at a power station nearby that some trucks use the side road for, and comed just came through and cleared out a bunch of brush near there lines which may have kicked it up as well.

Power station would be logical. Possibly a large cooling fin from a transformer. Aluminum is often used due to its fast heat transfer.

It looks like the grain/crystalline structure of some metal when it is broken. Maybe a metal bar or some such thing? When you post more pictures can you take some side pictures too? Also, I had a really cool looking broken piece of metal that I had left in my garage. The broken part rusted extremely fast, so you may want to protect it with some kind of clear coat. If it is aluminum it may tarnish.

I saw something like that back in 47 while I was stationed in Roswell New Mexico. Did you try bending it or burning it? :headbang:

I haven't tried burning it, and a shard of it was somewhat bendable. I'd asume something more logical like powerstation etc. related but it has a very thin rock-like outer layer. I lack the resources to do to much testing unfortunately. Wish i still had access to a portable xrf like i did in undergrad.

Kryptonite. Keep it away from Superman. :laughing7:

On the off chance your object is magnesium, I would only try burning a small thin slice of the object. Magnesium burns hot and is difficult to extinquish. Just thought I would mention it. Good luck identifying.

P.S.
Look at Density, Specific Weight and Specific Gravity

Hope this helps you.
