We transplanted a small clump of these to our yard in 2007. They were growing wild in an old cemetery. They spread some, but the lawnmower keeps them within due bounds. Nice little plants.

Pretty nice and yeah those prickly pear will take over. Lot of cacti south of here in the SLV and some serious ones whose spines will go right through cheap footwear. We used to eat those. You would take the fruits and roll them in sand to remove those small needles. Same way on the leaves, and you could bake them in a campfire. Little better with cinnamon and sugar. Far as I know, all types of cactus up here are edible, if you need to. And Maria still uses nopales in some dishes.
