Hello. 
I live in San diego county and I'm 19. Me and my friend ordered some basic gold panning stuff and the book recreational gold prospecting for fun and profit. It hasn't come yet. I'm really excited to go out there and start looking for gold though. Can anyone direct me to some tutorials or guides on this site that could be useful to someone like me who has never done this before? I'm particularly interested in information about how to read the land and creek for signs of where gold could be. I've only found vague or kind of confusing info on that so far.

the creek is congested with plants the little valley was like a jungle of poison oak, vines and trees. The creek filled with plants in many places. We tried in this area where there was a couple little water falls. I tried scooping sand from between crevices. Wasn't even sure I was panning correctly. But I think I am. Just figure there is no gold there to confirm it! I need to read the book but I left it in my friends car doh. I figure we just have to sample more areas. We will probably go on a backpacking trip this spring in cleveland national forest area where there are creeks in the mountains and bring our pans.
