Hello all! David here, I am an army civilian working and living in germany. The bug has bit me for metal detecting but budgets only allow for a little fun money. I recently purchased a Bounty Hunter Quicksilver that came with the pin pointer to start with. I know it is not the top of the line but with my limited time to do this I have no way to justify a larger more expensive machine. Testing it in my back yard has allowed me to determine 2 things, I have a lot of iron in the back yard and German modern coins are not so good after being in the ground as they rust from the center. First coin I found was a 1950 10 pfenning coin that other than the rust was in good shape. Today I got a chance to hit the local army post that will be closing down within the next 6-8 months and is basically empty now. I decided to try next to the chapel and hit iron right at the edge of the sidewalk on the first swing. It was a cool looking nail thing, 2 feet away I hit foil and 4 feet after that the Quicksilver buzzed and told me their was a coin. The ground was so hard that my little camping shovel folded on me and I had to hack the ground to dig, low and behold 4-6" deep, 1942 wheat penny! Other than the typical tarnishing, lines are clean and sharp. After digging I covered up my hole and had to get home. I hope to get back this weekend and check the entire area out and have a real shovel with.

Any others here on the board in Germany?

I look forward to future discussions here!
Take care all.

There are definitely people here from Germany. Welcome to the forum. I'd think the army post would have lots of coins. good luck

Welcome from the Granite State, New Hampshire.

Sounds like you are off to a good start. The army post definitely sounds like a great place to hunt and should give you lots of finds.

Went back today to where I found the penny. No more coins as of yet.. I did however have an interesting find.. An American m50a2 incendiary bomb :0. I still need to let someone in the area know about it but normally the area gets no traffic. Other than that I relieved the ground of a few old soda cans and a few other junk items.

I never made it to Mannheim when I was stationed there in the early 80's, but it was not uncommon to find unexploded ordinance then. If you can make friends with any of the German Police, they should be able to direct to to some great places. We were shown some old tunnels used in the war, that were supposed to be off limits. Wish I had been involved in detecting back then.

Best of luck,
Bill

Short follow up. I notified the military police about the find. Today I had to identify where I found it, where I placed it. When where what etc. I had to do an official statement with map of location and during that time EOD was dispatched and recovered it. The MP that took my statement though it was so cool and wished he could find cool stuff.
Bottom line, there is no issues with me detecting on post!
