Picked this up at an estate sale. Nothing else at the sale would suggest, or lead me to conclude it's use. All but the center shaft is made of Brass. The three prong spaceship looking piece is spring loaded with the very end, with a fairly strong Spring. The other end is hinged, and slides back and forth easily. This end is "barbed" in such a way, it suggests they are inserted, expanded, and then used to pull something out??

Thanks in advance!

Interesting find jules! The collar with the tapered fins is to center the device in a round hole or pipe. The jaws appear to be
capable of expanding or collapsing by turning the threaded shaft. The ends of the jaws appear to be threaded or ridged to grab
a specific part. See the longitudinal ridge opposite the threaded sides. That's a brace to insure the jaws don't break off
during use. I agree that it's probably for use in a flammable or explosive environment or with a magnetic component. The
jaws may not be brass but beryllium copper instead. Alloying copper with beryllium creates a non sparking rigid metal
that can be used for springs cutting tools or prying hammering/applications. I'm going out on a limb here but I believe
this may be a tool for arming/disarming some kind of an explosive device. Or perhaps for installing a new seal in a valve
in a petroleum facility.

Best wishes!

My first thought was honing tool of some sort.

Morning Jules, Does this thing have a number on it anywhere?

I'm with Cudamark and Bruce R. It is a specialized bearing puller. I have used a similar type way back in the day before the wheel was used.

Before the wheel is pretty way back.
