NOAA, National Association of Black Scuba Divers Explore Shared History

May 20, 2009

NOAA archaeologists will be in the Florida Keys this month training members of the National Association of Black Scuba Divers in underwater archaeology as part of a new education initiative to explore the maritime heritage of African-Americans and engage the community in marine resource conservation.

“By telling the many stories about African-Americans in seafaring, naval service, and the maritime trades, the project inspires a rediscovery of African-American maritime roots,” said Tim Runyan, NOAA maritime heritage program manager.

Fifteen participants will be taught the science of maritime archaeology and learn basic underwater surveying, recording and mapping techniques during the May 22-24 training course. The course will include classroom and fieldwork exercises on a shipwreck in Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, and stress the importance of conservation and preservation of the nation’s underwater cultural heritage.

NABS member Bill Murrain said the dive group’s commitment to education and public outreach aligns perfectly with the African-American “Voyage of Discovery” education and outreach initiative coordinated by the NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries.

“African-Americans have made significant contributions to the country’s maritime history and the archaeological training course will give NABS an opportunity to help bring this history to a wider public,” Murrain said.

The training is also part of a larger NOAA effort to create a cadre of skilled volunteers who can assist with archaeological field work and historic research occurring within the National Marine Sanctuary System.

NOAA’s Maritime Heritage Program and the Nautical Archaeology Society developed the training course to introduce divers to the field of maritime archaeology. Since the training program began, about 20 people have been trained as volunteer divers, seven of whom have become members of the national marine sanctuary volunteer diving program.

NOAA understands and predicts changes in the Earth’s environment, from the depths of the ocean to the surface of the sun, and conserves and manages our coastal and marine resources.

Hmmmmmmmm, I wonder what wreck they will be using along with a couple of other questions. The only two wrecks I know of in the Keys that would pertain directly to Black Americans would be the two Slavers. One off Delta Shoals and and the other off Indian Key. Both have produced many artifacts of that time period and trade for anyone wanting to work them. No real Treasure except about three dozen Ivory Tusks that came off the Delta Shoals wreck in the 70s.

Why is NOAA, a government agency, offering this training only to one particular group using our tax dollars? I personally think that something as cool as this should be offered to all that are interested.

It should also be noted that for an agency that is supposed to be dedicated to such a wide spectrum of focus. They have pretty much been unsuccessful in their endeavors. I would also like to ask the same question a lot of us asked in the 90s. Where in the NOAA charter does it give them law enforcement capabilities? That one went unanswered then and remains unanswered today.

I'm not going to get into my other questions as their is nothing facetious about my post and I don't want to start anything up here.

I agree. Of course anyone can join the group: "Membership in NABS is open to anyone regardless of race, color, ethnic origin, religion, sex, national origin, age, handicap, or veteran status" (from NABS web site). Membership dues are $30/yr.

That's very cool, thanx for the info. Let me assure everyone however that my questions were not directed at the ethnic name of the group or at any race, creed, spiritual belief, etc.. I just think that a program like that should be offered to all that are interested if our tax dollars are being used. After an hour or so of research I have not been able to find where it is.

No doubt. this post will probably get me in trouble with my beloved Tnet, but I just have to say this... I think that I might start a white maritime heritage thing. I wonder how many U.S. dollars I can get to further the education of my white youth as regards to their getting shipped over here. Let me tell you all... My Sottish ancestors on my mothers side were both kidnapped in England and delivered to the Americas as indentured slaves in 1753. They were 14 and 12 years old at the time. My Great great great great grandfather worked off his indenture after seven years , then worked to free the girl who, also kidnapped, was to become his wife. He went on to fight in the Revolutionary War and was with George Washington in Valley Forge. My ancestors continued to distinguish themselves throughout our country's history, right up to the time where my father had two aircraft carriers sunk underneath him during World War II. Gee, My Godson is a black youth, so don't start start on me being prejudice, I just feel the government is prejudiced and needs to look at the fact that there were a lot of sacrifices made to put this country where it is... Excuse me for saying this... but just because you feel oppressed, it doesn't entitle you to a damn thing! Earn It!
I'm afraid the Government is babysitting rather than educating...

Now there ya go, disappointing me. I thought you came from a long line of pirates and they turn out to me hard working, folks. My ancestors two Irish brothers also were kidnapped and sent here as indentured slaves. Unlike yours, they escaped and made it into the frontier. Several attempts to recapture them failed (unfortunately for those making the attempts) and eventually they made it into the Carolina's. They married, fought in the Revolutionary War with Marion and their descendants fought in the Civil War with Mosby.

When they had reached the Carolina's they had started hunting and dealing in hides. They established ties with the Indians and soon found that it was more profitable to trade for the hides then to hunt them themselves. The Kelly's eventually became one of the largest of the fur trading concerns and even had their own tanneries.

Anyway, congrats on having an upright family tree. I'll just have to settle for pirates.

Easy there big fella! If you started a NAWS, it would be considered racist! (That's National Association of White Scuba divers for those of you who had to think about it!)

How about WET channel. Or White History Month?

I am not a racist, but I do think there are alot of double standards when it comes to things like this.

This is probably not the most appropriate discussion here and I hope I have not offened anyone.

Its all part of Obama's stimulus package that he promised the African-Americans.Only 1 problem. They wont get paid.Since its a volunteer diving program. No offence to any African-Americans,if you voted for obama.

Living in Tejas we now say Ésa es asociación nacional de los zambullidores blancos de la escafandra autónoma

just kidding

The Organization The National Association of Black Scuba Divers, Inc. (NABS) was founded in January 1991 and has been a catalyst for promoting scuba diving throughout the African-American community. A national organization was needed to address the common interests of African-American divers.

Membership is open to anyone regardless of race, color, ethnic origin, religion, sex, national origin, age, or handicap.

Just a note but "Membership is open to anyone regardless of race, color, ethnic origin, religion, sex, national origin, age, or handicap" is necessary to say if you are to get Government grants.

That would be correct as long as that was the reason for not allowing you to join. You would also probably be required to file a case against them.

I would love to take a course like this. Would anyone know if they offer it to white people too?

I'm willing to pay for the course and materials. Free is nice, but I understand if I don't qualify for government freebies.

The dive and classroom training sounds exciting, challenging, and very educational. It also sounds like you get a certificate at the completion of the course, which is always a nice bonus.

Thanks for the link. That is a great course for $400.

I appreciate the information, thanks again!
