I'm with QuickS on his idea of it being an early pencil sharpener. I don't think it is from Japan. Back during the 1860's there was a pencil sharperner company named Strange. Is it possible the SI is S 1 and part of the letters you are seeing is RAN for Strange? Breezie

I think the key is to ID the SI/IS in a diamond logo.

Picture looks good Breezie. I think I even see some rust where the steel blade would be.

G, can you clean it a little better where the PAN or RAN letter are and take some pics of that area? Breezie

I also see Japan. I cleaned it and took more images. I think its a pencil sharpener. :dontknow:

Man this must be sharpener week, I didnt know what i had till seeing this post. This item was in my muddy mile post. The faber mark in BigCy's Reference post gave it up. Learning something new every day.
