Everyone is going to give you a different answer. The same types of varieties and errors on cents will be on other coins as well. Read the beginner's guide sticky and Google varieties and errors to find out more. The issue with coins are they're are no simple answers or a list to follow.

In general, you want to keep pre-1960 dated coins. And yes, the 2009-P is a keeper. A circulated example is worth about $1 - in other words, about the same as your average circulated War Nickel.

The key dates you want to save are:
1938 D
1938 S
1939 D
1939 S
1942 D
1949 S
1950
1950 D
1951 S
1955

Semi-Key dates
1938
1946-S
1947-S
1948-S
1951
1951-D
1958

There are also varieties to look for such as the 1939 doubled Monticello, 1949 D over S, 1954 S over D, 1955 D over S, and the 1990 D missing the designer's initials FS.

You will find lots and lots of 1940, 1941, 1946, 1954-D, 1956-D, 1957-D, 1958-D, and 1959-D dated coins if you go through any sort of quantity... While most of us keep them, they really aren't worth much unless they're high grade (extra fine or better).

This is just a starting point, but should help.

So out of $200 of nickels

1x 1939
8x 1940
7x 1941
2x 1942
2x 1946
4x 1947
5x1948
1x1949
2x 1952
2x1953
3x 1954
1x 1955
1x1956
3x1957
13x1958
7x1959 (1 near uncirculated)
1x1960 (near uncirculated)

2 war nickels - 1x 1944P and a 1945D both pretty worn

3 modern Canadian nickels

1x Philippines 25 sentimos

How did I do?

Also anyone know how to tell if a 1942 is silver. I saw some 1942 were silver 35% but no info on how to tell

All war nickels have the large mint Mark on the back above the building. No big P, D, or S on the back then it's just a regular nickel. They made both war and regular nickels in 1942.

Great. 3 war nickels then. One of my 1942 is a 1942P

Something I have been newly searching for is on the 2005 D Nickels there are three errors. One is a speared error, speared Rear and Detached leg. You can look them up on the net.

I sold a detached leg (caused by over polished die, the belly line also does not connect to the right front leg) found in a roll for $9.99 on 9/29/16. no speared yet____but I have a "wounded bison" die crack at the rump, and 2 "darted bison" with die cracks in 2 places from tail to rim. all are on Ebay with up close photos of the cracks. just wiggle a coin and let the light bounce off it and these errors pop when the reflection is distorted by the raised metal. kind of like "twerking" to make money :laughing7::laughing7::laughing7:
