DAY 1
It has been awhile since I did any detecting at the elementary school. Finds were getting pretty low and I wasn’t sure I was going back, but I decided to give it another go and got lucky.
I spent 6 hours swingin the CZ21 gridding section in front of the school I had walked over a couple of times. The good finds were few and far between, but I did manage to find 38 coins with a face value of $1.21, assorted jewelry, a led seal, a Canadian penny, 2 modern buttons, a key tag ring, an ace bandage clip, a decorative tube cap, a fishing sinker that was cut off to make a lighter one, 2 long copper jacket bullets, a few pencil ends, aluminum bottle caps, lots of aluminum foil, some can slaw and 32 tabs.
Most of the jewelry is cheapie, but the necklace is a goodie. It is a 15 inch rope chain necklace marked 925 ITALY and KA 1772. It was a weak mid tome signal. The necklace was balled up close to the surface with the cross. It was a real nice surprise and turned an ok hunt into a good one.
The lead seal is in bad shape. It was made off center and has been damaged and one of the wires was pulled out causing more damage. It is hard to get all the lettering but it looks like P S. O with half letters on the bottom edge maybe a W. On the other side & A. S Co. not a great find but certainly interesting.
DAY 2
I made my weekly trip to the K to 8 school hoping to keep my silver streak alive and found 2 items I have not found before.
I spent 6 hours swingin the CZ21 and found 36 coins with a face value of $1.53, 3 wheaties, a silver heart, an old ring, a token, a skull pendant (broken), a live rifle shell, an earbud, a modern button, a starter pistol blank, a smashed bullet, a toy truck, some construction lead, aluminum fence wire, a couple bottle caps, 32 tabs, 5 pencil ends and a big pile of can slaw and foil.
I was gridding the upper field and the good targets were few and very far between, but the can slaw was plentiful. After 5 hours of that I moved down to an area close to the school and found most of my coins there. My silver streak from this school is in tact with 6 hunts in a row with silver. This nice little silver heart will look good on the silver chain I found the day before.
The token is a first for me. It is an AA 30 day sober token made of bronze. The owner drilled a hole in it to hang it from something and unfortunately it fell off.
I dug up this old ring and when I rubbed the dirt off I recognized it right away. This is the first one I have found, but as a kid I remember seeing this pair in my shoes everyday, Buster Brown and his dog Tige. I remember the advertising jingle and after I found the ring it kept playing over and over in my head. LOL. The ring has been in the ground a long time and is in rough shape. I left a lot of the dirt on so you could see the features. If I clean it more it will probably not be recognizable. Buster and his dog are on the front, Midnight the Cat is on one side and Froggy is on the other. It was a promotional give away from the 1940s.
DAY 3
I went back to the park lake with the low water level. I figured I should go back and do what I can before the water level rises and hope for some luck. When I got there I could see fresh footprints in the sand that went back and forth in a loose grid pattern and I did see 2 or 3 spots where someone had dug.
I started out anyway working from the shore toward the water, the other person had gone left and right along the shore line. I spent 5 hours swingin the ATPro and had some luck. I set the pro on ZERO PRO mode, with IRON AUDIO on and the level at 30, with SENSITIVITY 2 down from max. Altogether I found a bunch of sinkers (mostly in the lake bed away from the swimming area), a selfie stick retainer, assorted jewelry, 2 aluminum rivets, a small nut, a chromed end cap, a Pepsi monopoly game tab, a bunch of foil and tabs.
The other detectorist must have only been going for the coin signals because I found lots of small items. Also I discovered they didn’t go all the way to the end of the beach. I didn’t find any coins in the first 4 hours, but when I got down to the end they didn’t cover I started to find coins. Not 2 feet from where they stopped at the edge of the water I found a spill of 4 dimes and a quarter. Boy am I glad they quit when they did.
The best finds were 2 silver earrings and 2 silver earring backs. Nothing big but I’ll take any silver I can find. The cz stud was down deeper than normal and from the tarnish level has been there awhile.
DAY 4
I went back to the scout camp to try and clean up another site and went to see what might be hiding along the shore line. (The water here is down low as well.)
In 6 hours of swingin the CZ21 I found 90 coins with a face value of $8.63, 13 camp tent pegs, fishing gear, a dead pocket knife, a rope tensioner, a zodiac token, a neckerchief slide, 2 boot lace eyes, a live rifle cartridge, a small drain type plug with chain, lots of sinkers, a few tabs and melted aluminum.
The zodiac token is a Capricorn and is really eaten up. The neckerchief slide has been in the ground for a while.
Most of the sinkers are from the lake with several smaller ones form the camp site. A nice variety of sinker types all the way up to 2 ounces.
NON DETECTOR FINDS
I found 2 pennies and a dime on our evening walks and an 8 gigabit SD card in the scout office parking lot. The card has no images on it so no memories to give back to anyone.
I found a turtle nest on the bank of the scout camp lake. Not sure if they hatched or the eggs were dug up and eaten, but definitely turtle eggs.
ADVICE FOR THE NEW FOLKS
You never know when the good stuff will turn up. Some places should be good and aren’t, others shouldn’t be good and are. Be patient it takes time to learn your machine and how to figure out what to dig and what to leave in the ground. Just get out there and swing as much as you can anywhere you get permission and goodies will surface.
