I got out in the woods today looking for some better condition coins,
followed a timber road, then stone walls.
Spotted apple trees in full bloom, which lead to the foundation.
searched a small area near the trees and got my first heel plate,
then a Nichols Stallion 250 capgun, well made toy from the 1960s :dontknow:
single or double action, fired a 250 round roll. still fully functional and selling for around $50 in fair condition
Lots of iron near the pile of rocks, I pulled an Otto Benz torch, design hasn't changed
I get an iffy signal at the edge of an iron null, dug it up, nice 1892 Barber Dime.
(I have the last Seated and the first Barber now)
I've learned this woods hunting is messier and more difficult than mudflatting.
This farmer had some nice fields, dark brown loam as deep as I dug anywhere,
would love to have this in my (sandy, rocky) yard !
Happy I was able to get some finds without rubber boots ;D
Great digs to you All !

That's a great dime with a strong strike Herbie. Much lighter circulation than the 1897 dime I dug about 2 weeks ago. Nice heel plate and other recoveries too Herbie. HH, Quindy.
Thanks Everyone!
I was grinnin when I saw that dimes condition ;D
The design wore very quickly, I got a bunch of pretty smooth ones.
Someone else posted a nice one recently and I commented on liking the corn and wheat wreath.
The homesite appears to have been occupied from the 1800s to 1960s,
no trace remains other than the low foundation and a square concrete well,
Fire maybe. there is a large area a ways out back where a barn or storage building stood, an area covered in tin roof material and barrel hoops. (tough hunting there)
Like Ahnold said "I'll be back"
HH to All

I would say that cap gun was very well made....wow. They sure the heack dont make em like that anymore. Great finds. I guess detecting is about the only way to find ANYTHING that is made in the U.S.A. anymore.
