The weather in Northern Nevada finally cooled down enough to hit one of my favorite areas for artifact hunting. It's private property and unfortunately the cattle have run of the land all summer, so there are LOTS of broken finds from here. But every once in a while you get lucky. They were in the process of rounding up all the cattle for the winter while I was there.
My first bit of luck came in the first 10 minutes after getting out of my truck when I was hiking towards a spot where I usually find good points.
My knife that I lost here 5 years ago! It's so arid out here that the knife is in great shape with no corrosion. Good way to start the hunt.

Next, I spot a point lying on the surface that looked like it was broken at the base and kind of jagged at the break, until I picked it up! What a strange dart. I find eccentric points very once in a while, but always smaller arrowheads, not darts. This one was worth the whole 4 hour drive to get here!

Other points found were a Humboldt Contracting Stem, a couple of Northern Side-notched, a Cascade, an Elko Corner-notched, and a small Great Basin Stemmed paleo.

NV is one of my favorite places to hunt! Stuff all over the place, but watch out for property rights and BLM land!

Now, those are something to write home about !!!
I'm green with envy!

Very nice finds ! Congrats ! Your "eccentric dart point" is very interesting and it intrigues me. Though I live in an area that was inhabited by early Americans & tribes, I have never actively looked for, or accidentally found, arrow, spear or dart points, & know absolutely nothing about them. When you say "eccentric" does that mean there is artwork on them ? Was it a common practice for the maker of the points to fashion images of living creatures on their points that were similar to their cave drawings?
The reason I ask is because your dart point appears to have an image of a running, barking dog on it. Is it just a coincidence or was it fashioned on purpose? Thanks in advance and thanks for posting your photos & finds. Really cool that you found your own knife that you lost 5 years ago!! CHEERS !!

Nah, those are just 'hinge fractures' from the basalt being uncooperative when it was being knapped. You'll see those on points made from materials with a bit of 'grain' to them.
Eccentric because yes, probably just artistic flair, because it falls outside of typical point typology characteristics. This would be classed as a Northern Side Notched generally.

Awesome finds, with that eccentric one ie more than unique - its Spectacular...!!
That image of a (wolf...?) makes it even more special!
Perhaps Ceremonial...P

I had to read and sign a paper once at the Hollister Mine out by Midus, that stated I now know and understand I can't be pocketing artifacts of any kind. Not even an old rusty can I believe. I at times would take a road from that mine that would dump me out on one of Newmont Golds property and on back to Carlin Nevada. There was a ancient quarry of a milky white chalcedony rock along the way. I would see points on the ground in the area and once in awhile I'd see points on the other road that would run out to Tuscarora and I would think there's gotta be arrowheads all over that country, but kinda sad it's preferred to leave them and let the cattle crush them all.

Following the rules of the road is tough to follow exactly....., but if you can wrangle a volunteer position with the land manager, you might be out in the field with them, using your knowledge and being an advantage to both parties...you and them...!
Good luck, you'll do well! :icon_thumright:
