Detector(s) used
Whites Prizm III
Well let me start by saying I am a newbie. Had my detector less than a week and I love it. Bought it with the intention of doing old foundations. Went out today and braved the bugs and heat and want some opinions if I am on the right track. The town was established in 1721 and this is one of the oldest roads that is now abandoned except for the occasional four wheeler or hunter. This house shows up on a 1881 map I have seen. The main house faces the road and there is another bigger foundation about twenty feet behind that I believe was a barn. Well is slightly behind the house to the right and there is a round grouping of rocks about ten feet behind it down hill. Could this be the privy?
I dug alot of junk metal. Had nails turned off on my machine so none of those. Found some old cast iron pans early with gate marks but all broken. Some stove parts, what i believe is a buggy seat. Alot of broken glass, but no coins. Had a blast though.
I will post some pics of foundation and finds. I do have a ton of questions though
Can anyone date this site by what I found?
Am i wasting my time looking for coins here with a whites prizm 3? I know I have to upgrade to dfx.
The broken glass was found directly behind the main house against foundation is this common or did some kids get everyhing from the house once it was abandoned and break it here?
And ideas on privy? would they put them close to wells?

Anyways here is the pics and any help is appreciated

Re: Newbies first cellar hole and I need help....UPDATED

Good eyes BB yes on one side it says Glasgow (as in Scotland) and the other is marked with the maker but I cannot make it out just yet. This town was originally a pretty active area in southern N.H. and had many inns and shops as far as my research shows. The town was a mayor stop on the way from Boston to Concord N.H. This site is away from town. I also found large clam shells and we are a good days ride from the ocean on horse.

As far as the china and such - these foundations have large pines growing up in them I am guessing 100 year old pines some have even grown large and died in here. so I believe that these have to have been abandoned since the early 1900's. I will draw a map of the site and maybe you can give me some input.

By the way the button is glass? Very pretty must be a ladies dress button.

The dirt road is about 2 miles long with only 1 other site on it but alot of fields on one end that are still being used today. I will have to get permission to hunt these. The road is More of a hard packed 4 wheeler trail now but I will detect it. Looks like I will be bringing my detector with me during hunting season out there.

Again I appreciate the help......

ALSO MY WIFE BOUGHT ME A THERMA CELL FOR CHRISTMAS AND I USED IT OR THE FIRST TIME TODAY. FOR EVERYONE WHO HAS NEVER HEARD OF ONE THEY ARE FOR BUGS AND HAVE A PAD YOU INSERT AND A BUTANE CARTRIDGE THAT YOU TURN ON AND THEY RADIATE A SCENT THAT STOPS BUGS WITHIN A 15 FOOT RADIUS. LET ME TELL YOU IT IS THE BEST MONEY SHE HAS EVER SPENT. THE BUGS DID NOT BOTHER US AT ALL AND IF YOU WALKED AWAY FROM THE AREA THEY WOULD ATTACK YOU INSTANTLY.... WALK BACK IN AND THEY STOP LIKE MAGIC... NO DEER FLIES EITHER AND THEY TORN US UP OUT THERE THE FIRST TIME OUT. A MUST FOR ANYONE ON A FOUNDATION DIG.... HOPE THIS HELPS SOME OF YOU OUT THERE. WE AARE GOING TO BUY ANOTHER.

hiya bassmstr, Very interesting site you have. Looks promising like everyone says. Ever thought about running your detector up and down the Rock walls? Also check the trees closely for holes in trunks marks and chains or ropes in them. I hope you come away with alot of goodies!!! HH Tom

Re: Newbies first cellar hole and I need help....UPDATED

Great site you got there, and awesome finds! You should save some of that junk iron you are digging up if it is not too much of a pain to haul it out of there. The Iron Brigade has found a recycling place that pays good money for rusty, dug iron. (Gas Money!)

Re: Newbies first cellar hole and I need help....UPDATED

Bassmstr,
You need desperately to latch up with a trusted friend who is experienced with a metal detector! Your site can be a GOLD mine, as in gold coins and such. As for where to hunt the site, my first suggestion would be to attempt to locate the driveway. The area between the driveway and the back door is always a good spot to start. Good luck! TTC

Re: Newbies first cellar hole and I need help....UPDATED

I have the same exact plate as the one in the second set of pictures in the lower right hand corner and the pipe I found last week is the exact same kind. That's so cool IMO . I'm located in Northern , VT almost on Canada border. I was so nervous after seeing your finds I trecked in today to make sure my site was still there as it was like I was looking at finds from my site. Wish we could date that plate. The blue wavy edge is awesome. I have nowhere as many pottery finds as you but I bet I could win a nail finding contest.

Keep us posted on the great finds.

Re: Newbies first cellar hole and I need help....UPDATED

Bassmstr,

Out of safety, I want to share what happened at a public park....

I've lived in this town for 30+ years, and the public park is right next to the city's large municipal pool. I got to know the maintenance fellow in charge of the park and one morning he stopped and told me what had happened a few mornings earlier. It was a cool October morning with a bit of chill in the air. After working in the pool-house, he went outside and sat down on a narrow bench just inside of the pool area. As he glanced passed the high chainlink fence and into the corner of the park where playground equipment was installed, he saw a cloud of fog rising from the ground.

He said, "The sight of that just didn't look right and in all the years I've worked in this park, by no means did it look normal."

He went directly to the faded plume of fog only to find that a hole had developed in the ground just yards from the small children's playground. Apparently it was an old abandon and forgotten stone lined hand dug well that had a sheet of steel covering it. The steel plate had rusted thin and ccrumbled inward. Below it was a 30' drop. Any number of children or adults could have fallen through the 4' diameter well.

By the time the city engineer, fire chief, and Parks and Rec. Dept. Personnel arrived, came up with a plan and cost, half the day was gone. In the end, it took more than two dumptruck loads of dirt to fill the old well before the top was cemented closed and covered with more topsoil...

Be careful out there, it's the things you can't see,
Bill

Re: Newbies first cellar hole and I need help....UPDATED

Thanks again everyone... As far as safety I have always had a partner when I go.

I know where he front door was as the road has been on maps since the 1780's and I will assume it faced the road. At this point I cannot turn on my detector without picking up iron so maybe 2,000 nails later I may find a coin.

I will post the pics of what I assembled of that plate so far with full markings on back.

I must admit this seems to be a unique site and I am a little put off on bringing anyone else out as I have already grown attached to it. I know I need help but if the gold or coins are there they will come slowly but surely and there is no need to rush it with people digging up nails all over the place. Think I am convincing my brother to buy a detector and joining me. Hey I always loved history and this is one way of getting a first hand look at life from a time long past.

Taking a buddy along is where it's at. It has to be someone that you trust.

You should try to discriminate out the nails--if you're digging a lot of them, you should bump up your discrimination setting a little.

And as far as taking anyone else from here or elsewhere--Don't. It's your site. Enjoy it. And as you said, the finds will come eventually. I'm sure besides coins there will be some great brass items coming out of there soon. Take your time, and enjoy such a good spot.

Getting a family member involved will be great fun for you as well.

Best wishes,

Buckleboy

P.S.--plain old Elmer's glue works astonishingly well at holding porous materials like pottery, stoneware, and china together. It sets slowly--and it is forgiving for reconstructing pieces with.

Re: Newbies first cellar hole and I need help....UPDATED

I think the blue wavy edged plate that we both found at our sites is a William Ridgway, Son & Co . There were a couple different names for the company but it is used this way sometimes. C. 1838-48 Church Works - Hanley

Here's a site you may find interesting as it pertains to the plate :

I enjoyed the following as well although it does not have our exact plate ....YET :

Lovin this thread and I thank you for the encouragement with your finds to keep me motivated to keep digging. I'm starting to learn the more I put the pieces of the family that lived on my site together thru research the more I realize I am looking in the wrong place on the mountain. Are your pottery being found all in one general area and is it inside the house foundation or not ? The only reason I ask is I don't really know what I'm doing out there besides digging and looking but I haven't ventured far from the foundation I found at all yet.

I know many people don't like to share a spot but if your ever in my neck of the woods look me up. I'm practically ready to hire someone experienced or pay weekend exspenses to come help me make some headway and possibly enlighten me to understanding my site & it's layout. Mine is so close by to home I have no desire to hunt anywhere else really.

Thanks again & look forward to more pics

Re: Newbies first cellar hole and I need help....UPDATED

Those are cool. Makes you wonder about the stories of hoe they got there!

Re: Newbies first cellar hole and I need help....UPDATED

here are the pics of the plate as as have assembled so far.

went back for a few hours after work oday and found another piece of the pipe. Another small glass button. and more pottery and as I guessed there is two stoneware crocks the top of the second says Helsea which I think is Chelsea but broken on the name. Found alot more glass tonight.

Also dug up a old western field 12 ga. shell and a Rem 30-30.

Midnightrider do not get discouraged by your spot. I really lucked out with mine. All of this is right behind the foundation down a hill like they just used that as a dump. I know it is not the only one on the property so i too will have to find the other. Thought maybe kids broke all the glass but I am finding buttons, a pipe, deer bones, and a spoon mixed in so it was a dump. Guess people back then were lazy too.

Very nice cellar hole! There is bound to be a silver coin in there when you get all of the iron out of it! :)
