Another thing to keep in mind about this story is that it's nearly 200 miles from the robbery site to Salmon, where the guy was arrested. So, all this about when he was taken back to the robbery site was spread over several days. The posse, as I understand it, came from Blackfoot, so didn't head out until the day after the robbery at best. Then, tracking to Salmon would have required about 3 more days, and then back to the site another 3 days, or so. Maybe a week overall? Also, one version of the story said the stage was sent on it's way, after the robbery, southeast towards Blackfoot. That would suggest the robbery occurred EAST of the Root Hog station which is about 12 miles Northeast of the Big Butte station, about 2 miles east of what is now Atomic City, along the old Arco hiway. That would refute the claim the stage was robbed Southeast of the Big Butte on its way to Springfield, unless the robbery occurred before the routes split. There is only one locale that offers a spot to rob the stage, before the routes split, and that is right at the southeast corner of the Big Butte. But, yet another version of the story is that they tracked him Around the butte to the Little Lost valley and on to Salmon. The only reason he would go around the Butte was if the robbery occurred some where South of the Butte. Anywhere east or north of the Butte the shortest route to the Little Lost would Not be to go around the Butte. Lots of contrary info out there on this.
