Welcome to tnet!

Your item appears to be a stained piece of quartz. Possibly from certain minerals in a stream.

Welcome Ga Girl! This quartz may be stained with iron oxide (rust).

The streams in Western NC are great places to find semi precious and precious stones. I once fished for trout in the Swannanoa River east of Asheville. The light wasn't good when we first got there so we waded into the creek and got on with fishing. It was in August and the water was warm enough to wade in shorts and sneakers. I was wading about knee deep and getting bites right along. After about an hour or so my legs started itch like crazy. I first thought I'd gotten chiggers and then maybe something in the water was biting me? About that time the sun came up over the mountain and illuminated the creek. I could see tiny red stones swirling along in the water. My father in law said, "Oh yeah, did I mention the garnet mine up stream from here?". I laughed like crazy but it took almost a week before skin grew back.

Best wishes!
