Hi there,

i apologise if you feel like i'm wasting your time but i found this rock few weeks ago on Portsmouth beach, England and I know its nothing to get excited about but for personal reasons I would really like to know what it is but have no idea where to even begin finding out what it's made of.
I might point out that it seems to me most of the rock is made of the same element(s) but here and there i can see small conglomerates of a different colour/nature.The rock is not as heavy as you would expect but not porous at all.

Any input would be much appreciated, and thanks for taking the time I know its nothing special but somehow it is to me.

Not sure Loop. looks like a rock to me. It is possible that it could volcanic. Most volcanic rocks that I have come across have been pores and fairly light. The specks in it could be granules of sand that have gotten stuck in those pores over time. Other than that, I have no idea.

Good luck though!

Looks a lot like a petrified whale or shark bone. They do tend to smooth over with time

I believe it is more along the lines of sedimentary versus metamorphic/igneous.

I guess it could be a number of things, but look at google images for petrified whale bones. We used to collect them as kids, heck even as adults

thanks everyone for your input i truly appreciate it.
I will do some more research on everything you suggested.

thanks again you were all very helpful : ))
