I am new to the world of MD'ing...but I want to get one for my husband (okay...me? ;) ) and one for my dad.? We will be using it once or twice a year at the beach (so we want one with a waterproof search coil)......then using it mostly around our homes in Eastern KY.? I want to start out with one in the $150-200.00 range...the cheaper the better.? ?;)? ?I was lookng at the Bounty Hunters...Tracker II and IV, Pioneer 202, and Titan MD...but I have noticed a lot of you don't recommend Bounty Hunter MD's...? so.......any advice?

I have read previous posts by newbies looking for MD's but I wanted ya'll's advice specific to my needs!? Thanks for your time!!!!

Lisa

Edited to add that we are leaving for the beach in two weeks so I need to get them...yesterday!? lol? ?:D
ALSO....what do you all think of refurbished, pre-owned, and/or demo MD's???? kellycodetectors.com has a
64-MP3PR MP3 Pro that is $159.99 (says it retails for $595.00) that is refurbished...is this a good deal? Is this a good MD???

Welcome to the T'net, lisadee! The Garrett Ace 250 is an excellent starter detector, and even the seasoned pros have been getting in on the action. It has some great features generally only found on more expensive detectors, and yes, it has a waterproof coil (most do nowadays). Go over to the Tech forum and there are a few great posts that will get you started once you have it, and you can download the manual at http://www.garrett.com to get a head start.

Kellyco sells some great packages for about $200 shipped; take a look at it then give them a call to tailor it a bit more to your needs. They will generally add/delete to yuor liking (within reason) and depending on where you live it would only be a few days until you have it in hand. They also sell on ebay under aardvarkmetaldetectors, they sometimes have even better packages there then on their retail site.

Good luck!

ace 250 hands down. it cant be beaten in the $200 price range.

[quote We will be using it once or twice a year ........... ;D The TreasureNet Forum = MD'er AA ;D .................................IF you can just use it once or twice a year you have a lot more will power than most (hehehehehehe) all it will take is one nice find and I bet you'll be wearing it out......... anyways, I use White's detectors have owned as many as 3 at once............I feel they are the best your $$$ can get........but it really all a matter of personal preference. just ask anyone hear on the forum and you'll get many different answers......find a dealer who'll let you test one and choose one that fits you........

I just wanted to say thanks for everyone's advice! I took it and got a Ace 250! Now my dad has one and my husband (read: I) have one! ;) We are leaving for the beach on Friday, so I'll let you all know how it goes!!! Wish me...errrr, us...luck! ;D

good luck with the new 250s! i think you will find that it is an awesome machine for the $.there is a little bit of a learning curve though, and it can take a few times out with it to get used to its quirks but i think that would be true with any detector.one thing is for sure.....if you have any trouble there are lots of 250 users on the board to answer questions and give advise.

lisadee,
Old (ex) south-eastern Ky here. Just wherabouts is youall located? But seriously, the 250 is an awesome machine. Works as well as machines in the 2 to 3 times as expensive range. I have a DFX(Whites) and am waiting for my Explorer(Minelab) to get here, but if I was starting out today it would be a 250 hands down.
Now, if you're close to Campton, there are lots of rumors about Swifts Silver Mine being in the Red River Gorge area. Just be careful, a lot of people have disappeared in that park. little bit farther up the road, around Virgie there used to be an elementary school that washed away in a flood in the late 70's. I dropped lots of coins around there in the 50's and 60's. Moving on up to Jenkins, there are tons of stories about the caves in Pine Mountain. One of them is the Great cave of the Shawnees where the tribe stashed tons of silver before blowing both entrances shut.
At Shelby Gap, there used to be an old school on the left just befor you got to the Elkhorn City intersection. Abandoned schools are great places to hunt. (churches, racetracks, playgrounds,) If you head up to the Breaks of the Big Sandy, Chief Benge(also Bench) had a silver mine there later used by the Melungeon Sol Mullins when he (Sol) was counterfieting.
Down Robinson Creek there used to be a pony/horse sale area. Good place to look around as lot's of people came to those back in the 60's.
Welcome to the great pleasure of MDing. Lots of great people here and many of them are pretty sharp when it comes to ideas for hunting or tweaking your machine.
Happy Hunting and make your poke always be full

ps just remembered, at Three Mile (between Dorton and Shelby Gap) there used to be a school just before the forks of the road (maybe 3/4 mile up road) My uncle taught there in the 30's and 40's and even though no one had much hard cash, I'm sure you could find something.
