Hello to all I am looking to get my first detector first for gold prospecting down to small flake and 2nd for coin & jewelery hunting .I am looking at a new minelab 705 gold pack or a Fisher gold Bug and in used a MXT, or Mine lab 705 gold pack , Eureka Gold , GPX5000 , Explorer SE , E-Trac , Safrai , Explorer 2 ,Quattro ,Explorer XS all in my price range.I am leaning toward the 705 Gold pack ,E-Trac ,Eureka Gold and GPX5000 in that order any recommendations would be great.

maybe the at gold

First, WHERE are you going to be nuggetshooting, what state? You listed the Mack Daddy of gold nugget hunters - the Minelab GPX 5000, and there are none better, however if you are not in an area with larger, deeper nuggets it's like taking a elephant gun to the dump to shoot rats. If you are looking for a good gold nugget hunter and coinshooter, look at the Fisher Goldbug Pro and the Tesoro Lobo Super Traq.

Terry's suggestions are right on but I would add the White's GMT.

The XT705 is hot in the Austrailian gold fields from what I've been reading. And I can attest to it's ability on coins & relics. It's a very versitile feature packed unit.

Weasel fee free to give me a call. Be glad to help you, answer all your questions and make you a great deal on a Minelab GPX 5000 if your wanting the very best!

Terry it would be in Montana & Wyoming and one of the places in wyoming that I would use it the most is known for small flake gold.

Longhair have you tried your XT705 on gold ?

Dude, they are using the T2 SE to mine for gold in Africa....

Hello Weaselguys! Give Mike, at Woodland Detectors a call, he usually has a good stock of new and used machines. He has a friend, that has a Whites M6 that would be a good machine for gold detecting. His phone no. is: 1-855-966-3563

Wow this has been a hard decision ,I think I am going to have to settle for something somewhere in between what I want and what each machine will do.I have narrowed my choices to the white mxt ,tesoro lobo super traq and the minelab 705 gold pack. I now I will probably see gold flake the most so it must find that ,work in high minerialized soil and must be capable of coin & jewelry hunting.

All I'm saying is...They specifically use the T2 SE in Africa to find GOLD. You want to find GOLD. Happy hunting no matter what your decision. It's all preference...

Ive done a lot of reading on the mxt and m6.... The m6 does not have a prospecting mode....the mxt/mxt pro does have a gold prospect mode....im just stating the facts

I am going with the Tesoro Lobo Super Traq ,I found a used one on ebay , so I'm not wasting as much if I don't like it.I have a feeling this will only be my first detector.

Ive heard nothing but good things about that detector! Its the only tesoro with auto ground balance too which is nice

I got my detector today and for being used it looks almost new. I checked it out on coins & jewery works fine and the I broke out a small vial of gold I had and it wont pick it up, could I have pyrite instead its not metallic. I had it on all metal ,low and high sensitivity ,min on disc ,normal ground and got not a peep .

Sure looks like nuggets. Smack one of the pieces with a hammer. Gold will flatten, Pyrite will shatter. Better test would be a gold test kit though.

Howdy Wease,
The gold I find in California is bright gold. Get a small split shot fishing weight and try that on your your Super Traq, it should sound off like crazy on the lead. If it does not sound off then there is something wrong with how you have the machine setup or with the machine itself. If the machine will not sound off and you want to keep the machine, it is a good machine when working properly, then contact Tesoro and send the unit in for them to check it out and this is not a bad thought even with a machine that is working but is new to you.

Also, Like RESET suggested!

This stuff has been sittng dry in this vial for close to 30 yrs ,I'm sure I got it at my Grandpa's panning booth at the Plumas Co fair. I have now put water in the vial and it is much briter and was seeing what I thought were air bubbles on the nuggets but I now think it is beads of mercury instead.
