newbie here, with whites m6 questions?

Hi guys and gals, im new to metal detecting but i really seem to like it and need a little help? i have a whites matrix m6 that i bought brand new and a 5 inch excelerator DD search coil and all i seem to find is trash? i know it picks up coins and jewelry because ive planted some in the yard and tried so it does work, i just dont know if im doing something wrong or what any suggestions? anybody in the cookeville area want a hunting partner that can maybe give me some pointers too? Welcome! the M6 should work fine, we all dig some trash to get to the treasure. I'd concentrate on a small area (10'X10') and dig everything that beeps, then go back over the area again. I'm sure you will find some coins among the trash.
