Detector(s) used
Lonestar
I just received my metal detector recently, but I can't seem to find anything except for junk!

I went detecting in the woods for a few hours and I found 5 bottlecaps near a bench, and old gross rusty piece of metal with a hole through the top and notches in the side, and 2 triangle shaped pieces of aluminum.

i went out again, this time to a party spot the morning after a grad party. i got in a bit of a scrap the previous night, i had 3 MGD's in my hand at the time, and 2 of them broke during the fight, and I lost 2 quarters from my pocket. I tried detecting where I had thought I got in the fight thinking i'd find at least the quarters... but I couldn't find anything useful... i kept swingin' around but it was soooo trashy it was ridiculous, even playing around with DISC & AUTO NOTCH it kept picking up so much useless crap. I ended up leaving with a penny and a key chain. There was also a nice ECKO shirt that someone left covered in mud I took home and threw in the wash, turned out pretty nice haha, so i guess that was my best find.

can anyone give me any pointers??

EDIT: I'm using a Bounty Hunter LoneStar

It takes practise before you start finding the good stuff.
Do some air tests? with coins, jewerly, ect and play around with the settings.
learn what the detector is telling you and what it's limitations are.
Then go back to that party spot and get your quarters back and any
the other guy may have lost. By the way what is a MGD ?.

Good Luck!

MGD = MILLERS GENUINE DRAFT

right. It depends what you want to find. If you want to coinshoot ( find lots of coins ) then try beaches and parks etc. If you want to find some real HISTORY then you need to check old houses farmers fields old battlesites etc. Research is the key.

We all have been there. How I got past the junk was this... I had some pennies, nickles, dimes, and quarters, laying around took them outside and threw them over my back into the yard. then some pull Tabs, and other metal objects. What I learned from hrs. of this and hunting in other locations was the difference in the tones that my detector was making and kept mental notes as to what it possibly could be. A good place to start is a church were they hold youth group functions outside. I collected probably 30-40 dollars worth of clad coins that those kids lost. But in that time I was learning what my MD was telling me.
As to the other I always like to put my MGD down before the action starts. HH dave

Thanks for the info guys. I'll try some other locations, and play around with my detector in the yard some more to practice :)

okay I toyed around for a few hours in the yard with different objects.? I think I have a better grasp of how to use my detector.
I live in Kamloops, BC Canada in a community called Juniper Ridge.? Everything is fairly new around here...
any suggestions where to go next?

EDIT: also when you guys find a big token item such as a gold ring or a coin worth quite a bit, where do you turn such items into cash?

go back to that party spot and get your quarters back!!!
Clear out all of the junk, Then the good stuff will start to show up.
Go back several times each month. Keep the area clear of junk.If the spot is used by the party crowd you will have a good chance at finding good stuff lost by party-animals.
I hunt the exact same place every other day and as you can see by my posts in the Todays Find forum my method works quite well.

That's a really good idea. I'd be really comfortable up there too, no one to disturb me during the day.
I'll post a picture next time I go up there :)

Correction, that's a REALLY, REALLY good idea. learning how to clear the trash is part of the game. Learning what different pieces of metal sound like is part of the puzzle. A friend of mine has taken several months working on a 25 acre piece and last Saterday it paid off, he found a 1849, $2.50 gold piece in VF condition. It was just under the sod but in an area where he picked up a 2 pound coffee can full of nails lead. Also, be carefull about what you think is trash as it could be a piece of something truly great. Inspect closely what you find, make a proper identification then do what you want. One mans trash is another mans treasure. Enough of my rambelings, enjoy your time in nature what ever you are digging.

I have found that where people hang out now, usually some of the older generations used to hang out there also. A little research into this area might be just the ticket. If you lost some items, then chances are someone else in the past has also lost something. It sounds as if this area has been used quite frequently by others. When I search in such places I usually will look at all the other sorounding areas. Are there any places that a couple might like to venture into to be alone? Are there any trees that a group might sit beneath for a picnic or that kids might climb into. It's amazing at the money and jewelry and such items that has been lost thru-out the years. As stated by others before me, slow
down and listen at what your MD is trying to tell you. It gives you a real good feeling to follow another
detectorest down the beach and pull up a diamond ring, gold necklace or diamond bracelet that they
had just passed by. It looks, at times, like they are swinging a weed-eater instead of a Metal Detector.
Patience does have it's REWARDS !

If there is any drug use there be sure to watch out for syringes. HH.

Thanks for the heads up, but there isn't really anything like that. Lots of marijuana/coke/meth and that sort however. Kids around here aren't into shooting up :P

Ive been to Kamloops, My nextdoor neighbor is a snow bird from there, go to the lake and get permission to search the shore where they held outing in the 1800s, also where the loggers barrooms where located, this will require some townhall/library research.
I have found some of my best coins by reading the newspapers from the past, IE: Toonerville Times July 4th 1923 ,Joes circus and Girly show was setup in John Jones north pasture , hundreds attended. Now go to courthouse/tax office etc. Somewhere it will tell you exactly where this was in 1923, then you get permission and go to it.
