Newbie Detecting Frustration!

Went to the city park this time, its a fairly old one (1910 or so). Set the discrimination and the sensitivity, adjusted, swung, adjusted.... Was getting good at IDing pennies, got a couple dimes, and some quarters. Nothing old, but didn't have to dig too much trash. Was a good night and renewed my faith in the machine and got me going again. Ready to go out tomorrow night!

I feel your pain. Here in GA the clay is like concrete without rain and with its gooey. My brother finds old coins and Civil War relics while I'm still finding pretty much trash and little clad if I'm lucky. He's been doing it for a while and does lots of research for places to dig. He also spends many hours digging. This is my first year and I don't have as much time as I like. I happen to be a Gal and not safe to go alone and taking somebody that dont care for my hobby is nothing but a disaster! Both of us love the adventure and if not trying to retire on our findings. What was your reason for getting in to metal detecting? Yes, it get's frustrating in the hard dirt, heat and Mosquitos only to find a wad of deteriorated foil scattered over a yard of ground while others are posting and some are even boasting about their finds. I've often wondered about the honesty factor, too. Nonetheless, don't let that distract you. Stay focused, get to know your MD if it means digging up your whole yard as I have done. Research and plan your course of action. Somebody mentioned keeping a journal is helpful and I plan to try that, too! Keep Digg'n!

Just something from another newbie at detecting...

I am new to the hobby as well, however I think the attitude makes all the difference. I am using the trash I dig up to help me learn to pinpoint better. I spent hours on a small swimming hole in my area yesterday, and found 5 pennies one buffalo nickel and a backpack full of trash.
The trash I dug out I look at as a safety issue... so I am a hero for taking things the kids can get hurt on. Plus I think finding anything is special... even the trash.

Good luck to you, I hope you do well.
