Thank you. I've searched everything I can find and although I have seen other examples most seem to be a much later vintage and exact details are sketchy as far as who may have worn itNice find. I'd say about 1850 without doing a Google search.
Dug in Suffolk County on Long Island NYadditional details would help with id. I’ll check button books tomorrow, but where was it found (directionally)? Also was anything else found in proximity that would help with a date.

Thanks for that! That book is an awesome reference and hard to come by I seeAlbert’s NY 33B. Falls into the “later ny state seal buttons”. Not sure on an exact date, but pretty sure that’s your button.
Edit: footnote in the book says that many of these buttons were used by municipal employees rather than soldiers.
It’s a good reference, but dated. I looked in tice’s first and didn’t see your button (doesn’t mean it wasn’t there). Copies can be had for ~$100 on eBay, which isn’t horrible for out of print reference booksThanks for that! That book is an awesome reference and hard to come by I see
