Assays can still be useful to help show what is in a lode rock sample. Finding some colors is a start.
The question how much per ton is something else. The "Fire assay" will give some idea of this and is a excepted method to show others.
The values can always "Pinch out / cut off" at any time in a given "Discovery vein". It is up to nature on this.

That came off of a 24 pound sample. We're still excavating the dump to find the portal. We've got a tail sticking out of the hill so that's our starting point.

This one came off a low grade vein on the same claim. 400 pounds of ore run.
 

And that was just what was easily panned out...got about 3 lbs of heavy cons carrying values that needs smelting
