Hello all this is my first post as a newbie. I recently was forced to retire due to back injuries and am limited to walking only for exercise and so I decided to take up metal detection since I usually walk the beach here in San Diego. I have been out only a few times but have managed to find many pull tabs, a silver button and about 2 dollars in coins. While this is not much I am not complaining as I can only walk for short periods but the enjoyment I get from using the detector helps me for a time to forget the pain. I can say the 505 has done all right for me. I was able to find a dime at about 10 inches deep in the sand with it. Any way just wanted to say hello and hope to find more as I learn more about my machine thanks to all for your posts I find them enjoyable and educational. Thanks Ted

Ted,
Welcome!

Hi and Welcome, MD'ing is great excercise and lots of fun to boot. I have a Whites detector myself and I'm still learning all its little quirks and settings. I can't say that I have found anything as deep as 10 inches but it reaches down to a pretty good depth. I surprised myself as to how hooked I got with MD'ing. I want to get out everyday now. I'm sure you will get hooked as well. Good Luck and Happy Hunting.. MidnightGuy

Thadious,

I am fairly new to MDing and got my first MDer also a BH 505 on July 3rd. I am slowly starting to get feel for it. More I use it the better I am becoming.

Hello and welcome to the board! I'm fairly new here myself, and I know EXACTLY where you're coming from with the back problems. I'm only 42, hurt my back at work 3 1/2 years ago, have just had my 5th back operation this past Wed. (12th) and I'm collecting workers comp. and Social Security Disability. I'll more then likely never be going back to work at all. I got a detector almost 2 months ago and before my latest surgery was out with it almost every day. I am VERY sore right now and it'll probably be a month or so before I can get out with the detector again. I did find it very relaxing and great excercise and lots of fun. Can't wait to get out there again!!!!

Hi There,
Welcome to the forum, a great place to spend your time ::)

I have heart problems (electrical not physical) and am waiting for my last operation to happen very soon. I was told that I must not exercise because even without exercise I get a heart rate of about 230 bpm (should be between 60 and 90 beats).
But have found that metal detecting is the great way around this problem. I get out and about, very slight exercise (gets the legs though), and when I find, great rewards...... and of course it is great fun.

So hang in there, and keep us all posted.

God bless
Peter

Welcome to the forum. I am a newbie as well. This is the first forum I have ever written on....I spent so much time looking at it I figured maybe I should start writing.
I hope this hobby finds you some loot while helping your back at the same time. I am so surprised how much I have enjoyed this hobby...it is WAY better than playing golf!!

Welcome to the forum and to the hobby...I have a BH Tracker IV and love it, works great for me. Best of luck and watch your back when digging, don't need to hurt it more. HH

Welcome Thadious I got into metal detecting while trying to recover from a back surgery as well. First through the internet and this very forum. And then when I felt my back was recovered enough to bend and dig on a regular basis I bought my first detector.

But you will find that all you need to enjoy the hobby to the most degree. Is your machine and this Forum.

You meet some of the greatest and most informative people here. Want to learn something just ask. I have met a great many friends here and have improved my techniques through thier advise.

So once again Welcome

One more thing about San Diego and it's beaches......

Wait for your first real good El Nino.....

Hit those beaches hard.....You will be amazed at what washes up on those beaches...Remember on a beach after a storm go Low and slow and dig everthing....

After Hurricane Isabelle Hit us a couple years ago The Virginia Beach oceanfront looked like a Metal Detectors convention the following morning.....Was a great day...
