Been doing a lot of research over the summer and last week finally got out and knocked on a couple doors since the crops are now coming out of the fields. Was able to secure permission from 2 landowners to hunt 4 different sites. Reid and I hit the first one yesterday. It was a 165 acre cut cornfield that was across the street from an early 1800s home. Right after we got there the owner/farmer stopped by and I chatted with him a bit. Of course, like we always hear, he said "you're not going to find anything out there". He did mention in the conversation that years ago he had stumbled across an old cemetery in the far back part of the field, but thought is was related to the early 1800s home. After walking around looking for a few random finds we ended up in the back thinking maybe that cemetery was related to another old home that was back in that part of the field. Once there I quickly found a tombac followed by a couple more flat buttons. I called Reid over and we spent the next 3-4 hours hitting that hotspot. I ended up with about 40 buttons, including a period VA, as well as a VA halfpenny and sutler's token. Most of the buttons were late 1700s to early 1800s, but there was not the usual house debris as I was expecting. So this must have been some sort of early camp, similar to another nearby site we hunted the last couple of years. It was apparently also used at some point during the CW since a few period items of that nature did show up. Reid also dug a nice pile of goodies, and we had a blast to start the season. Looking forward to getting back in there as well as hitting some of the other new sites. HH to all!!
