So back in early December I hit a tot lot I had always meant to hit. I knew a lot of people used the ball fields nearby and I thought it'd be loaded. It was loaded, but with trash and just wasn't what I was in the mood for. I started home to go to a back up site and passed for about the hundreth time this big old house on the side of the road that looked like someone stopped living there 20 years ago. It was definately 1800's, and was collapsing in some areas. I decided that at the very least I'd pull in, look around to see if it showed signs of still being owned, or perhaps find out if the state owned it now or something.
I pulled into the driveway and could see in the dirt and grass that someone had driven there recently. Down back it looked like an old barn had collapsed and the tire tracks went back and forth from there. Darn I thought as I walked around trying to determine if it was worth getting permission to detect.
Well I wasn't there more than 10 minutes when a truck pulled into the driveway. I thought to myself, oh boy, here it comes, will it be angry land owner, or cool land owner.
Well, to make a long story short, it turned out to be VERY COOL land owner. We chatted for about 20 minutes and he took me for a tour of the house and property. He explained that he purchased it from a person who was a hoarder (I could tell that) and over the years he has been working on cleaning all the junk out. The basement had a beehive fire place in it, so I'm thinking the original house is more from the 1700's.
So after chatting for a while I asked for and received permission to detect which he happily said yes to. The detecting was hard around the house as it was a bit over grown, and as it turned out was infested with poison ivy. (which we ALL KNOW you still get even with the leaves off) I ended up needing a steroid treatment a few days after my first visit.
Coming back another time, I decided to check out the woods where I felt perhaps there would be less trash, but perhaps some old goodies.
I ended up finding a sweet spot in the back corner of the property about 40 feet from an old stone wall and a large old tree. I started getting some really nice signals in this 15-20 foot sqaure section. Long story short, I pulled out 6 really nice pins/broaches. I'mnot sure why they were all concentrated in that one area, but I'm not complaining. It was really exciting to see beautiful item after item to come out of the ground.
The silver item, my guess at first was that it was an earring, but looking at the copper part on it, I'm thinking it is a hat pin, with the pin broken off. Does anyone have any other ideas?
Enjoy the pics.
