The caretaker of a local monestary comes to my work place for coal for the place, my boss just gives it to them. Right now the place is inhabited by a group of Carmelite nuns who never go outdoors or anything. Anyway, the caretaker is about my age and their kids are grown and flown and he's looking for a new hobby. I told him about my metal detecting and he wants to get into it also. I went there yesterday and let him chase my detector around awhile and he found a few odds and ends and is real excited about getting his own machine. End result, .I'm welcome anytime and theres a couple hundred acres to search. The monastery was built in the early 50's, before that it was a farm, before that it was a bunch of little homestead farms. The best thing is that the general public, with their trash, has basically never been in there. Cool, huh ?

What would be a good starter detector for this guy? He wants me to help him pick one. Off the top of my head, I'd suggest a name brand machine in the 3 to 5 hundred dollar range as a good all around detector that wouldn't need to be upgraded for quite awhile. I've been using my Prizm 2 for years and only recently have I been considering moving up to an MX-5 or something.

I have a XLT that I will give to him.

Thanks for the offer Al, but he's determined to buy a new machine. He has no money problems, he's actually a retired firefighter from Boston, plus he gets a wage and he and his wife have a nice farmhouse rent free plus basic utilities. Sweet deal, huh ?

In that price range I would say the Garrett Ace 400 would be a great entry level.
